A prominent representative of the Return to Order, a movement parallel to the German New Objectivity and the Italian Novecento that promoted a classical and refined style based on a return to classicism, she was praised by the public and critics, exhibited both in Spain and abroad, and participated in renowned events such as the Venice Biennale and the Carnegie Prize in Pittsburgh, where she exhibited alongside Salvador Dalí. However, like many other women who achieved renown and fame in her time, she ended up forgotten. In the summer of 2024, an exhibition at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid, the second solo exhibition the museum dedicated to a Spanish artist after that of Isabel Quintanilla, brought together part of her production from the 1920s, 30s, and 40s—the period most sought after by museums and collectors, and to which this work belongs—rediscovering and highlighting the value of this exceptional and little-known artist who excelled with one of the most brilliant careers of the era. A great painter of modernity, as the American Hispanist Shirley Mangini called her, Rosario de Velasco settled in Barcelona after the Spanish Civil War, where she lived until her death in 1991. The light and vibrant colors of the Mediterranean transformed her work. In Catalonia, the artist began a creative evolution that, over the years, led her to abandon figuration and the more academic forms of her Madrid period to begin exploring color and, above all, textures. She was also forced to adapt her artistic career to her new role as a housewife and the upbringing of her daughter, María del Mar: “I paint in seasons; women are always overwhelmed by housework. That’s why I can’t waste my effort on painting portraits of other women who try to look interesting,” she would say. He would continue to paint them, though without the passion and dedication he would later bring to the rest of his work—he found it tedious to paint hands and small details, as he would later explain—with the exception of those he painted of his daughter: “When my mother made me pose for a portrait, or because she wanted to paint my hands or capture one of my poses, it was incredibly difficult for me to stay still. That's why I always asked her to tell me one of her stories; they were wonderful and kept me entertained. In this painting, I'm about four years old, and my mother portrayed me next to the daughter of the owners of the inn—which had a farmyard—where we slept in Collsuspina, a village in the interior of the province of Barcelona. We would go there in the spring to collect ears of wheat from which we extracted the pollen that my father, Javier, who was an allergist, then used for vaccines.” Regarding her love for animals, which led her to depict her dog Skipi, the Siamese cat Canilla, or the grumpy dachshund Chispa in many of her paintings, as well as birds, rabbits, or donkeys, as in this painting that resembles a charming corner of a Neapolitan nativity scene, Rosario de Velasco wrote in those memoirs she never finished, found in a drawer by her family: “On windy and stormy days, a strong smell of rockrose would arrive. It could be smelled when those enormous carts pulled by two oxen and piled high with these shrubs went through the streets to deliver them to the bakeries. The cart, which was made of wood, creaked, and the oxen strained when a hill appeared. The carter would exclaim and, standing in front of the oxen, shout at them and push them with a long pole which, to my great sorrow, I learned had a pointed nail with which he prodded them to goad them on.
