Zacarías González Velázquez (Madrid, 1763–1834) “The Immaculate Virgin” Oil on canvas. 148 x 107 cm. The present painting appears to be published in Bertha Núñez's monograph Zacarías González 1763–1834, Plate 20, no. 23. In her introduction to the theme of the Immaculate Conception in the work of Zacarías González Velázquez, Núñez writes: “Throughout his long and productive career, Zacarías González Velázquez interpreted with remarkable mastery the quintessentially Spanish subject of the Immaculate Conception. Given the number of preparatory sketches that have been documented, it may be assumed that he executed a considerable number of finished works on this theme. The examples examined below reveal the evolution of a style which, beginning from inherited models, ultimately succeeded in creating prototypes and details that made the artist immediately recognizable.” Referring specifically to the present painting, the author notes: “There can be little doubt that this representation of the principal Marian devotion was executed during the artist’s early period, since both the compositional scheme and the retinue of angels and cherubs recall the style of his master Maella, while already incorporating characteristics distinctive to the artist himself, particularly in the treatment of the draperies and the compact handling of the paint surface. The youthful face of the Virgin, distinguished by delicate features and long dark hair, emerges among the clouds, with the symbolic serpent placed beneath her feet.” The composition reflects the enduring popularity of the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception within Spanish religious painting and demonstrates the close relationship between Zacarías González Velázquez and the artistic legacy of Mariano Salvador Maella, one of the leading painters of the Spanish court during the late eighteenth century. The Virgin is represented according to the traditional iconography of the Immaculate Conception, standing upon clouds and accompanied by angels and cherubs, her youthful beauty and serene expression conveying both purity and divine grace. The elegant treatment of the draperies and the refined modelling of the figure reveal the artist’s technical skill and his ability to combine academic discipline with devotional sensitivity. ZACARÍAS GONZÁLEZ VELÁZQUEZ Madrid 1763 - 1834 The Apostle James at the Battle of Clavijo. 1789-1791 Oil on canvas Dimensions 158 × 111 cm Provenance: - General inventory of the possessions of Zacarías González Velázquez, Madrid, July 14, 1834. - Awarded to Gabino González Velázquez, December 3, 1866. - Private collection, Madrid. Zacarías González Velázquez, court painter and academician of merit at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, developed his career through religious commissions, court work, and tapestry designs, combining the academic training he received from his father, Antonio González Velázquez, and his teacher, Mariano Salvador Maella, with a refined use of color and a detailed treatment of fabrics and secondary elements. The work now presented, Saint James at the Battle of Clavijo, belongs to the iconographic tradition of the apostle as a military leader, inherited from Francisco Rizi and Juan Carreño de Miranda, and also disseminated by other contemporary painters. It depicts Saint James leading his knights on a white horse in the midst of the battle against the Muslim troops, following the account in the chronicle of Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada (1243) and linked to the iconography of the Order of Santiago. The canvas shares its composition and iconographic scheme with a sketch held in a private collection in Bilbao, although it is larger and lacks the angel with a banner in the upper margin. This suggests that it may have been intended for a side altarpiece or a chapel, although it is not possible to confirm whether it was linked to the commission documented by the Court of Churches to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando between 1797 and 1807. Documentary records indicate that the work remained in Zacarías's studio until his death, passing to his son Gabino and remaining there at least until 1866. Both the sketch and the completed canvas demonstrate González Velázquez's mastery of composition and visual narrative, as well as his ability to engage with the academic and religious traditions of the late 18th century. Painter of precocious talent, Zacarías González Domingo was professor of drawing in the School of Nobles and Fine Arts of San Eloy, although later he moved to the School of Fine Arts of San Fernando, in Madrid. He developed a first figurative stage from the forties, where he showed the influence of Picasso, Cézanne and Gutiérrez Solana. Later he evolved towards a predominantly abstract language, between the fifties and sixties, a period in which González achieved international recognition and was awarded the Biosca Prize. At this stage he delves into material experimentation, using metals, wrought iron, wood and large amounts of paint. Finally he will return to figuration already with a fully mature language, and will focus on classic themes such as still life, the figure (especially harlequins and other types that he repeats) and landscape, generally urban. In 2012 an important retrospective exhibition was dedicated to him at the Palacio de San Boal in Salamanca, organized by Caja Duero.

Follower of ZACARIAS GONZÁLEZ VELÁZQUEZ (Madrid, 1763 - 1863); end of the XVIII century. "Holy Family". Oil on canvas. It has a frame of the nineteenth century. Measurements. 63 x 50 cm; 72 x 58 cm (frame). This work follows a model of the painting that is found in the back room of the Cathedral of Jaén, the painting known colloquially as the painting of the Scissors is the work of Salvador Maella, master of Zacarías González Velázquez. This particular work is aesthetically closer to the work of his disciple than to that of Maella. The scene is set in a private interior, as can be deduced by the presence of the furniture, although this interior is merged with a break of glory in the upper area of the canvas. The work shows a certain influence of baroque models, in spite of being a work made in a later period. In the center of the scene is the Holy Family, and in this case it is Saint Joseph who holds the Child Jesus in his arms, thus showing the relevance of his figure during the baroque period. Son, brother, brother-in-law and father of painters, Zacarías González Velázquez developed a career closely linked to the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, of which he would become general director in 1828. The influence of the artists of his family and that of the Academy will be, together with his courtly career, the two key factors in the development of his life and work. Zacarías joined the Academy of San Fernando in 1777, under the guidance of his father. That year he began his training, and the following year he was awarded first prize in the second class of painting. His studies, plagued with success, concluded in 1782, and since then the painter accepted a series of private commissions, including the series of paintings of the life of St. Francis, made in 1787 for the church of San Francisco el Grande in Madrid. The decade of the eighties was for Zacarías González Velázquez a period of intense work, which culminated with his appointment as an academician of San Fernando in 1790. Later he was appointed assistant professor, a position he held from 1793 to 1807. During these years of plenitude he achieved the position of Honorary Chamber Painter, in 1801, and the following year that of Numerary Chamber Painter. By then he had already made his most important works in fresco, among them those of the Chapel of San Isidro in Madrid (1789) and the Royal Oratory of the Caballero de Gracia in the same city (1792). In the early years of the 19th century he painted the frescoes of the Casa del Labrador del Escorial and the King's Room in the Palace of Aranjuez. He also carried out important religious commissions, as well as portraits of his family and himself, the royal family and some of the most distinguished gentlemen of the time. In 1807 he was appointed lieutenant director of painting at San Fernando, although his ascending career at the Academy was paralyzed by the French invasion and the War of Independence. During this period Zacarías González Velázquez will remain in Madrid, joining the Chamber Painters of José I, although after the return of Fernando VII he will have no problems to rejoin the service of the monarch. Thanks to the protection of the prince.

ZACARIAS GONZÁLEZ VELÁZQUEZ (Madrid, 1763 - 1863). "Scene from Don Quixote: Oil on canvas. Relined. Unpublished work. Presents faults in the pictorial surface. Measurements: 38 x 30 cm; 44 x 36 cm (frame). This scene reproduces the moment in which Don Quixote is presented to the lady Dulcinea del Toboso in the inn where he stays, but in reality the lady is a humble farmer called Aldonza Lorenzo. Don Quixote idealizes her and names her as his lady of his heart. This is part of chapter XVI entitled "De lo que le sucedió al ingenioso hidalgo en la venta que el se imagina ser castillo" (What happened to the ingenious nobleman in the inn that he imagines to be a castle). The type of sketchy brushstroke and the way of composing the figures bring this work closer to the painting of Zacarías Gonzalez Velázqez, who in 1812, in a context marked by political instability and the decline of artistic activity at the court, found space to devote himself to a more personal, creative and inventive production. It was then that he created a series of 14 scenes inspired by Cervantes' famous novel, in which he combined narrative detail with a pictorial sensibility typical of incipient Romanticism. Son, brother, brother-in-law and father of painters, Zacarías González Velázquez developed a career closely linked to the Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, of which he became general director in 1828. Oil on canvas Inscribed on the paper in his hand: "Here the brush brought together/ A beloved family/ Grosolei gave it life/ And Velázquez painted it". Original 18th-century frame in moulded and gilded wood. On the back, on the frame in handwritten ink: "Ya i be??do"; on the frame in handwritten ink by the author: "The unforgettable friend of a m...? family, Zacarias Velazquez" This is the artist's fourth known self-portrait and the latest, painted when he was around sixty years old. The first self-portrait was painted in 1802 when he was thirty-nine; the second around 1813, when he was close to fifty; and the third in 1817. All of them are a psychological representation of the painter, a reflection of the vital moment he was going through. In this case, having already been named Director of Painting at the Academy by Ferdinand VII, he is represented without artifice, just as he is, proud as a painter and father of a family, as is evident in the note he carries. ZACARÍAS GONZÁLEZ VELÁZQUEZ (Madrid, 1763 - 1863) "Composition". Oil on canvas adhered to tablex. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 47 x 38,5 cm; 59 x 67 cm (frame). Son, brother, brother-in-law and father of painters, Zacarías González Velázquez developed a career intimately linked to the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, of which he would become general director in 1828. The influence of his family's artists and that of the Academy, together with his courtly career, were the two key factors in the development of his life and work. Zacarías joined the San Fernando Academy in 1777 under the guidance of his father. That year he began his training and the following year he was awarded first prize in the second class of painting. His successful studies were completed in 1782, and from then on he accepted a series of private commissions, including the series of paintings of the life of Saint Francis executed in 1787 for the church of San Francisco el Grande in Madrid. The eighteen-eighties were a period of intense work for Zacarías González Velázquez, culminating in his appointment as an academician of San Fernando in 1790. He was subsequently appointed assistant professor, a post he held from 1793 to 1807. During these full years he achieved the post of Honorary Chamber Painter in 1801, and in the following year he was made a Pinto de Cámara Numerario. By then he had already executed his most important works in fresco, including the Chapel of San Isidro in Madrid (1789) and the Royal Oratory of the Caballero de Gracia in the same city (1792). In the early years of the 19th century he executed the frescoes of the Casa del Labrador in the Escorial and the King's Room in the Palace of Aranjuez. He also executed important religious commissions, as well as portraits of his family and himself, the royal family and some of the most distinguished gentlemen of the time. In 1807 he was appointed lieutenant director of painting at San Fernando, although his career at the Academy was paralysed by the French invasion and the War of Independence. During this period Zacarías González Velázquez remained in Madrid, joining the Pintores de Cámara of Joseph I, although after the return of Ferdinand VII he had no problems rejoining the service of the monarch. Thanks to the protection of the Infante Carlos María Isidro de Borbón, his career continued to grow.

Male portrait that stands out for the mastery of an artist who exalts the details in a sober and austere composition dominated only by the presence of the protagonist on a neutral background. ZACARIAS GONZÁLEZ VELÁZQUEZ (Madrid, 1763 - 1863) "Saint Raphael". Oil on canvas. It presents restorations. Measurements: 110 x 77 cm. Devotional image that presents us the archangel Saint Raphael, who appears in a simple and clear composition, perfectly didactic in front of the spectator and in full body. In the foreground, he appears holding the fish, which hangs from one of his hands, while with the other he holds the pilgrim's staff. The artist worked on the depiction of the archangels for the decoration of the decorative pendentives of the Royal Oratory of the Caballero de Gracia in Madrid, the predatory drawings being part of the collection of the Madrid History Museum. Thus consolidating an iconographic pattern in which the figure of the archangel is presented as here, through the figure of a young man with rounded forms and rosy cheeks. In this case Saint Raphael is wearing a headband, as in the preparatory drawing of the pendentives, although the colour of his clothing is different and the way in which he holds his greatest attribute, the fish, also differs from the aforementioned drawing. The son, brother, brother-in-law and father of painters, Zacarías González Velázquez's career was closely linked to the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts, of which he became director general in 1828. Size: 17 x 21 cm; 26.5 x 30.5 cm (frame). The scene is set in a private interior, as can be deduced by the presence of the furniture, the chair and the lectern that precedes the virgin, although this interior merges with a break of glory in the upper area of the canvas. The work shows a certain influence of baroque models, despite being a work made in a later period. The two large figures are placed in the foreground: the Archangel Gabriel, whose clothes are moved by the wind to suggest that he is flying, raises one of his hands towards the sky and points towards the dove of the Holy Spirit, which appears wrapped in light, next to the figure of God the Father. Mary, dressed in a pink tunic and a dark blue mantle, bows her head slightly with humility and clasps her hands against her chest, gestures that define her intention to accept the message that is being transmitted to her by the Tariff. Next to him, a low table with a book on which he rests his hands refers to the instruction that the Virgin would have received. It is worth mentioning that the archangel carries several white flowers, specifically a bouquet of lilies, allusive to the purity of the Virgin and which are one of the most common iconographic attributes in the representation of this scene. Son, brother, brother-in-law and father of painters, Zacarías González Velázquez developed a career closely linked to the Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, of which he became general director in 1828. The influence of the artists of his family and that of the Academy would be, together with his courtly career, the two key factors in the development of his life and work. Reference bibliography: - Berta Núñez, "Zacarías González de Velázquez (1763-1834), Fundación de Apoyo a la Historia del Arte Hispánico, Madrid, 2000, pp. 231-232. Given their size and subject matter, this pair of canvases with their gentle bucolic theme must have formed part of the series of paintings which, on the artist's death, were awarded to his daughter, Mariana González Velázquez y Fernández. In the Inventory of Assets of 1834 they are described as: "A collection of fourteen paintings of country subjects; the twelve are one foot and seven inches high by one foot and three inches wide". Given the stylistic characteristics of Zacarías González de Velázquez's works and coinciding in subject matter and measurements, it is clear that these works may have been part of the aforementioned series, in which the painter depicted scenes of rural life in a humane and kindly manner with an idyllic treatment. They are possibly copies of a series by Paolo Molandi that belonged to the gallery of the painter José de Madrazo. This is evidenced by the initials "PM" on the white earthenware plate of the "Peasants Preparing Lunch". Pair of oil paintings on canvas. 44,5 x 35 cm.

    Est: €30,000 - €40,000

Zacarias Gonzalez de Velázquez tackled the subject of the Archangels on more than one occasion, his best-known work being the project for the decoration of the pendentives of the Royal Oratory of the Caballero de Gracia in Madrid. There he painted Saint Michael, Saint Gabriel, Saint Raphael and the Holy Guardian Angel, all of them lost but known thanks to the preservation of their preparatory sketches. Apart from this group, we know that he tackled the same subject on other occasions, as devotional works, as is shown by the Guardian Angel, which was once in the old de la Riva collection and with which this work has many stylistic parallels. The Archangel Raphael is shown standing in front of a beautiful mountain landscape with a wide canopy of sky. In accordance with his traditional iconography, he is dressed as a pilgrim with sandals, staff and veneras and holds a fish in his right hand, recalling the biblical passage from the Book of Tobit. The painting reveals the influence of his master, Mariano Salvador Maella, and is executed with his characteristic precision in the drawing, meticulousness in the finish and a harmonious palette of harmonious tones.. ZACARIAS GONZÁLEZ VELÁZQUEZ (Madrid, 1763 - 1863) "Our Lady Giving the Rosary to Saint Dominic de Guzmán". Oil on canvas. RELATED BIBLIOGRAPHY: NÚÑEZ, B. Zacarías González Velázquez (1763-1834). Madrid: Fundación Arte Hispánico, 2000. Size: 50 x 36 cm; 71 x 57 cm (frame). This canvas represents one of the most outstanding episodes of the legend of Saint Domingo de Guzmán, the apparition of the Virgin of the Rosary to the saint. It is an unpublished work that was studied by the prestigious Caylus gallery. With regard to the subject matter, it is worth mentioning that tradition, which began in the 15th century, tells that the Mother of God herself taught Saint Dominic to pray the rosary in 1208, telling him to propagate this devotion and use it as a powerful weapon against the enemies of the faith. Appearing in the chapel where the saint was praying, holding a rosary in his hand, he taught him to recite it, promising that many sinners would be converted and obtain abundant graces. St. Dominic went out of there full of zeal, with the rosary in his hand. He did indeed preach it, and with great success, bringing many Albigensians back to the Catholic faith. The scene depicts the presence of a small dog carrying a torch in its jaws. This iconography alludes to the dream of Saint Dominic's mother, before he was born. After dreaming of a dog carrying a torch coming out of her womb, the mother made a pilgrimage to the monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos to find out the meaning of her dream. There it was revealed to her that a child would be born, whom she named Domingo, in honour of the monastery. Son, brother, brother-in-law and father of painters, Zacarías González Velázquez developed a career closely linked to the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts, of which he became director general in 1828. ZACARÍAS GONZÁLEZ VELÁZQUEZ (Madrid, 1763 - 1863). "Pair of scenes from Don Quixote". Oil on canvas.

    Est: €8,000 - €10,000

ZACARÍAS GONZÁLEZ VELÁZQUEZ (Madrid, 1763 - 1863). "Pair of scenes from Don Quixote". Oil on canvas. Size: 38 x 30 cm. Pair of oil on canvas representing two scenes from Don Quixote. One of them has as protagonist a young lady, who is preening herself in a river, while she is spied by two characters, who are hidden behind a stone. The young lady can be identified as Dulcinea. The other painting is starring Sancho and Don Quixote, and can be identified with the title Don Quixote finds the bacía. Both works fall within the framework of the rise of regionalism during the second half of the nineteenth century and the first third of the twentieth century. This period saw the development of an art of romantic heritage, costumbrista and of realistic and meticulous workmanship, which focused on the representation of subjects, themes and characters that reflect a new sense of folklore. In this context, the painters sought to reflect the types and customs of their own land, which made it different and unique, thus vindicating their own roots and, above all, the traditions and ways of dressing and behaving that were threatened by the notable growth of urban areas and the imposition of new fashions brought from outside. Art, fundamentally in its pictorial aspect, thus becomes in a certain way a vehicle of expression capable of making regional peculiarities known to the rest of the nation. Zacarías González Velázquez began his training in the studio of Mariano Salvador Maella, and later completed his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, where he was awarded prizes in 1778 and 1781. He was a painter of chamber and academic of San Fernando, becoming director of painting and general director of the Royal Academy. As a decorator, his work in the Royal Sites, in the palace of El Pardo and in the Casa del Labrador in Aranjuez stand out. He also participated in the decoration for the funeral of Queen Maria Amalia of Saxony. It is also worth mentioning his work at the Royal Tapestry Factory of Santa Barbara, for which he made cartoons for tapestries with marine themes, based on sketches by Maella, revealing himself as a master of composition and a great colorist. His works are framed in the transition from baroque to neoclassicism, and the earliest ones already show a predominance of drawing over color, a totally neoclassical feature. However, in his final paintings the chromatism is enriched and acquires greater relevance, while showing a precious interest in the treatment of the fabrics and secondary elements, which is even more evident in his portraits.Zacarías González Velázquez is represented in the Prado Museum, in the Romantic Museum of Madrid, the Lázaro Galdiano, the Museum of the Origins (former Museum of San Isidro) and the Diocesan and Cathedral of Lugo, among others.

Portrait of the Painter's Daughter. H. 1810 Oil on canvas Size 64.6 x 51.5 cm The portrait that we now present shows us a young lady dressed as a pestle with an elegant white mantilla to match the closed fan that she wears in her right hand. This popular clothing that was born in the Madrid neighborhood of Lavapiés was adopted by wealthy ladies as a sign of national pride in response to the Napoleonic invasion. Zacarías González Velázquez married Juana Fernández Rebustillo on February 21, 1792 and they were the parents of Andrea, Pablo, María Clara, Juliana and María Ana. Of the four daughters we only know the portraits of the two little ones, Juliana and María Ana (private collection, Madrid). In the San Pío V Museum in Valencia, the triple portrait of the painter's daughters is preserved, with steorotyped features that make their correct identification difficult. In the absence of other works that help to identify the young woman portrayed, we venture to think that it is the portrait of María Clara González Velázquez (1795-1836). Curiously, the model bears a great resemblance to the lady portrayed in the Meadows Museum in Dallas. In any case, we are faced with one of the most beautiful portraits of Zacarías González Velázquez that have appeared on the art market recently.
