Although Adriaen van den Velde, a son of the marine painter Willem van de Velde the Elder, died relatively young, he still produced a varied œuvre that included landscapes, animal pieces, genre paintings and portraits. He was also a popular figure painter who, according to Houbraken, painted the figures in works by Jan Hackaert, Jan van der Heyden and Frederik de Moucheron, among others.

Although Adriaen van den Velde, a son of the marine painter Willem van de Velde the Elder, died relatively young, he still produced a varied œuvre that included landscapes, animal pieces, genre paintings and portraits. He was also a popular figure painter who, according to Houbraken, painted the figures in works by Jan Hackaert, Jan van der Heyden and Frederik de Moucheron, among others.

Adriaen van de Velde (Ámsterdam, 1636-1672) Paisaje con pastor y rebaño. Óleo sobre tabla. Pintor especializado en la pintura de paisaje y animales. Nació en el seno de una familia de pintores: tanto su padre, Willem van de Velde I, como su hermano, Willem van de Velde, el Joven, fueron afamados pintores de marinas. La mayor parte de su obra está formada por paisajes de su Holanda natal, que alternó desde los inicios de su carrera, y especialmente a partir de 1667, con vistas italianas. Estas últimas, que derivan de los paisajes de Nicolaes Berchem y Karel du Jardin, pues no está documentado que viajara a Italia, representan pastores y animales situados en paisajes montañosos, a menudo próximos a las ruinas clásicas, e iluminados por la clara luz mediterránea. Fue un artista versátil que también pintó escenas de invierno, retratos en exteriores, alegorías, temas religiosos y de historia, así como alguna escena de género. Adriaen se formó primero con su padre, al igual que su hermano, y después se trasladó a Haarlem para completar su aprendizaje en el taller de Jan Wijnants, pintor especializado en paisajes. Allí entró en contacto con Philip Wouwerman, quien parece que lo ayudó en sus estudios de animales y ejerció una poderosa influencia en su estilo. Sus progresos fueron excepcionalmente rápidos, y fue empleado por su maestro para la realización de las figuras incluidas en sus composiciones de paisaje. También colaboró con Meindert Hobbema, Jacob Ruysdael, Adriaen Hendriksz Verboom, Frederik de Moucheron, Philips Koninck, Jan van der Heyden y Jan Wijnants. En 1657 se estableció en Amsterdam, donde residió hasta su fallecimiento. A pesar de su corta carrera, poco menos de dos décadas, Adriaen van de Velde fue un trabajador infatigable que produjo un gran número de pinturas, dibujos y grabados. Sus temas favoritos fueron escenas en prados abiertos con ovejas, vacas y cabras que ejecutaba con destreza y precisión utilizando colores claros y tonos plateados. Las figuras de sus composiciones destacan por su gran tamaño, por la individualidad y por la meticulosidad con la que están tratadas, traspasando así la función de mero elemento anecdótico dentro del escenario.
