Jim Ede bought several such landscapes for his Kettle''s Yard museum and gallery at Cambridge and it was here that the artist enjoyed a 90th birthday exhibition. The present pencil sketch is a preliminary drawing for the ink and wash painting "Chesil Beach" which now hangs in the collecton at Kettle''s Yard, Cambridge. Vellacott referred to these drawings as her "inkwash drawings".

§ Elisabeth Vellacott (British, 1905-2002) Oak leaf with red sequins, sequinned fabric No.1, from the 1940s sequinned fabric h:49 w: 50 cm Provenance: A gift from Elisabeth Vellacott to the present owner circa 1980. Exhibited: The Redfern Galleries, Elisabeth Vellacott - A Memorial Exhibition, 2003, No.74. Other Notes: During the 1930s, Elisabeth Vellacott's main work was in textiles. Few have survived. They were fragile and could not successfully be washed or cleaned. In 1939 she met Lucy Boston and this led to the commission to make curtains and bedspreads for the Manor at Hemingford Grey. Muriel Rose, who ran a crafts gallery famous at the time, was still showing her work during the war, but in 1942 one of two bombings on Cambridge destroyed Vellacott's studio and everything in it. After the war she exhibited occasionally at Primavera in Cambridge. As a surviving fabric rather than a design, the present work is certainly a rarity.
