Olan Ventura (b. 1976) a) The Last Time I Saw Green I Was Red signed and dated 2011 (lower right) acrylic on canvas 60" x 48" (152 cm x 122 cm) b) The Last Time I saw Green, It Was Red dated 2011 lightbox 10 1/2" x 8 1/2" x 2" (27 cm x 22 cm x 5 cm) While he may be occasionally referred to as the middle sibling of famous Ventura brothers, Olan Ventura has carved his own name in Philippine visual arts, through his brand of hyperrealism that showcases the monumentality of everyday objects such as action figures, an assembly of portraits of locals and international artists replete with their respective styles and symbols, as well as the oppositional forces present in domestic life. His figuration is both exact and exacting. One can’t help but feel that his works have the clarity and realism of photographs. These two pieces by Ventura feature renditions of an iconic portrait of the revered visual artist Pablo Picasso. The acrylic on canvas work features the portrait itself, while the lightbox emphasizes Picasso’s ring. The mysterious and eerie atmosphere of Ventura’s can be attributed to his use of inverted colors and hues, an effect akin to viewing analog negatives. Yet Ventura’s negation can also be seen as a form of subversion. In this context, Ventura seemingly criticizes the hegemonic shadow that Picasso had cast throughout his latter years, a method that also effectively extends Ventura’s criticism to the art world itself.

The title, Gas Mask, is self-explanatory, with what looks like Morris Louis’s coloured lines streaking down all around the young lad wearing a military-grade mask. Such masks may be more for the battlefield where chemical warfare is rife, killing innocent women and children in the vicinity. The mask may also be useful with air pollution caused by rampant industrial development, what with an average of 4,000 dying annually in the Philippines from such environmental degradation like illegal mining, logging and automobile fumes. The Philippines, after all, is a signatory of the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Rolando (Olan) Ventura is no stranger to Malaysia. He had a solo in Kuala Lumpur in 2009. He was one of the four Jurors Choice Award winners in the Philippines Art Award in 2005. Rolando is the second of the Ventura brothers, the eldest being the more famous Ronald and the youngest Roldan (Manok). Rolando’s Morning After, a 2012 triptych, sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong auction in October 2013 for HK$225,000 (RM124,118).

Olan Ventura (b.1976) Consciously Unconscious Manila-based hyper-realist painter Olan Ventura ventures into the psyche of the human mind contemplating on human mortality. Patterned after the famed sculpture The Thinker by Auguste Rodin, Ventura poses a Chinese laborer with his hair dressed in cue drawn from 19th century meditating while relieving on the ceramic throne. Here, the worker is not dressed in his traditional changshan as in the past, but is clothed in the fashion of contemporary workers of the present. Here, the worker smoking with his pipe delves into his personal demons represented by his own X-ray image, as he faces the facts of life and his own mortality. Ventura uses images culled from nostalgia in his depictions in art, as his very own analogy in representing the present realities being faced by society. In the age of instant gratification and a fast-paced world, Ventura induces through his art to take a breather and contemplate on one’s decisions. Ventura graduated with a bachelor’s degree, majoring in Fine Arts from the University of the East in 1998. Ventura has since mounted sixteen individual exhibitions and participated in various group exhibitions at numerous galleries and art spaces in Philippines and other parts of Southeast Asia. These exhibitions include: Black Light, White Shadow at Ayala Museum (2011), Dark Light (2010) and Negative Light (2009) at West Gallery and Toy Box (2009) at TAKSU Kuala Lumpur. Olan Ventura (b.1976) Untitled In some of his works, Olan Ventura explores the everyday tension that assails ordinary life. This compulsion is perfectly executed by this painting that shows and unpacks the fundamental difference between a man and a woman (and possibly a husband and a wife). With their confrontational stance and with the way they wield their cutlery like weapons, they are immersed in a brewing conflict that threatens to explode. The long red table symbolizes their unbridgeable gap while the calendar affixed on the wall — the only decoration in the house — indicates the span of time that this tension has been building up. Roland ‘Olan’ Ventura is one of the celebrated Ventura ‘Three Rs’ Art Brothers in the Philippines – Ronald, Roland and Roldan – all of whom are gaining a lot of traction with their divergent art, especially the eldest brother Ronald, who holds the auction record for a work in the Philippines .Here, ‘Olan’s work depicts a kimono-clad women but with the flesh in photo-negative tones, the face etched only by the eyes, nostrils and lips gap. A cartoonish decal of a samurai on horseback hovers above and a skull lies under where she is seated. The backdrop is studded with a nondescript shape, probably a dragon fruit.Olan graduated in Fine Art from the University of the East in 1998. His younger brother, Roldan, was also from the same university, but Ronald received his BFA in Painting at the University of San Tomas. Olan was featured in the Toy Box solo at Kuala Lumpur Taksu in 2009.
