Opera di formato ridotto rispetto al modello monumentale conservato presso la Chiesa di Santa Corona, da cui riprende l’impianto compositivo generale ma con evidenti semplificazioni. La scena raffigura l’episodio evangelico dell’adorazione: al centro-destra la Vergine seduta con il Bambino, affiancata da San Giuseppe, mentre in primo piano uno dei Magi, inginocchiato, offre il dono; gli altri personaggi e il seguito si dispongono lateralmente, con figure di servitori e animali, mentre sullo sfondo compare una struttura architettonica lignea in rovina e, nella parte superiore, angeli tra le nubi. L’impostazione scenografica e diagonale, tipica del modello veronesiano, è qui tradotta in forma più compatta e meno articolata, con riduzione del numero delle figure e semplificazione degli elementi architettonici.Entro cornice.

The focus is on the Pharaoh's daughter, dressed in royal attire and surrounded by a richly attired entourage. The naked child is presented to her, while she decides his fate with a calm, dignified gesture. The composition clearly follows 16th-century Venetian models, in particular the iconographic and compositional tradition of Paolo Veronese. The central, aristocratically upright female figure, the bright contrasts of yellow and blue, the ornamented fabrics, and the park-like landscape with its wide depth gradation and architectural backdrop all refer to the great Venetian history painting tradition. Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 76.8 × 106.5 cm, with frame. The Finding of Moses presented here clearly falls within the sphere of Paolo Veronese and can be attributed to the master around 1581–1582, due to the great similarities it maintains with the version held in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, one of the autograph/workshop variants of the theme made in the early 1580s. In both paintings, a very characteristic compositional scheme is repeated: the main group is organized around the naked child, held by a kneeling female figure, while the princess occupies the center as the visual focus, adorned in a sumptuous brocade gown and jewels, leaning towards her retinue. Around her appear the same court ladies with delicate gestures, an African servant in the foreground, and a short figure integrated into the scene—elements that form part of Veronese's specific iconographic repertoire for this subject. Beyond the theme, the physiognomic and postural models coincide remarkably: oval, porcelain-like faces, blond hair adorned with pearls, long, elegant hands, and a serene theatricality in their attitudes, reminiscent of the Venetian painter's later style. The color palette is also very similar, based on refined contrasts between pinks, blues, and pearly whites in the dresses, with golden accents and a cool, crystalline atmosphere in the landscape—a typical feature of his "contemporary" vision of biblical narratives. The landscape background—with its river, bridge, and distant architecture—is constructed with the same intention of opening up the depth through a blue-gray horizon, and the luminous sky with its soft clouds contributes to the poetic and idyllic feeling that the NGA studies emphasize in Veronese's work. All of this, combined with the fact that a number of very similar variations of The Finding of Moses, executed by Veronese and his workshop during those years, are known, reinforces the attribution of this painting to the master's immediate circle, with a particularly high degree of formal and qualitative similarity to the Washington version. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany; acquired auction Lempertz, Cologne 20th November 2020, lot 1028; delivered there from Rhinish private ownership with reference to the information Joh. Paulus Imhof, 1668 verso. The present painting refers to the famous work "venus and Adonis" by Paolo Veronese from 1580-1582 (Madrid, Museo Nacional del Prado). However, it displays several differences to the painting at the Prado and thus cannot be viewed as a mere copy. According to Thomas Dalla Costa the peinting stems from the 90s of the 16th century and presumably is a work by Carletto Caliari, Paolo Veronese's son. Paolo Veronese painted the painting, today kept in Spain, for a Venetian patrician as it was purchased by Diego Velázquez for Philipp IV of Spain in Venice in 1651. There was a corresponding painting, Cefalo e Procris (Musée des Beaux-Arts in Strasbourg). Admittedly, we do not know for whom the present painting offered here originally was painted and whetehr it had an equivalent. Nonetheless, it bespeaks the success of the first version by Paolo Veronese because the studio created a high quality variant within one decade after finishing the former. We are grateful to Thomas Dalla Costa, Rovereto for suggesting the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a high-resolution digital photograph and for his kind support with cataloguing it. (Rome, 1978), p. 88, no. 104. cites a single impression in the Biblioteque nationale, Paris, which bears the publishers address of Marco Sadeler. Subject: Adoration of the shepherds, after Veronese, with slightly to the right the Virgin unveiling Christ Child sleeping in a manger, St Joseph standing behind her, shepherds gathering around them; more figures observing the scene from an elevated terrace, and in the upper section angels carrying a banner. The painting by Paolo Veronese (1528-1588) shows a Saint or donor instead of the shepherd at right and is now in San Giuseppe di Castello, in Venice.

Das vorliegende Gemälde ist stark an das gleichnamige, jedoch bereits 1573 von Paolo Veronese (1528-1588) enstandene Gemälde angelehnt. Das Bankett spielt sich unter einer prächtigen Loggia ab, die sich nach vorne und hinten in ein von korinthischen Säulen getragenes Gebälk öffnet, mittig als Rundbogen. Vorne, zum Betrachter hin, ist eine Treppenanlage zu sehen, mit zwei Läufen links und rechts, auf der einige Personen hinauf- oder hinuntergehen. Im Bildzentrum sitzt an einer gedeckten Tafel jedoch nicht Jesus inmitten zweier Jünger, sondern ein Rot gekleideter Priester, links neben ihm könnte Jesus sein. Im Gegensatz zu dem Original fliegen über den beiden im Himmelbereich zwei Putti, die ein schmales Spruchband halten, auf dem unter anderen das Wort „PAX“ für Frieden zu finden ist. Figurenreiche Darstellung mit vielen Details. Anmerkung: Das gleichnamige Gemälde von Paolo Veronese zählt mit den Maßen 5,6 x 13,09 m zu den größten Leinwandbildern seiner Zeit und hängt heute in der Gallerie dell´Accademia in Venedig. In seinem ausführlichen Gutachten kommt Pilo zu dem Schluss, dass es sich bei dem vorliegenden Gemälde um ein Werk des Paolo Veronese handelt. Horizontal sich ausbreitende vierpassige Kartusche. Darin Darstellung rechts eines architektonischen Portikus mit gedrehten barocken Säulen, links ein auf Stangen getragener Baldachin mit Goldtressen und Brokatmuster. Dazwischen der Heilige Nikolaus mit Kirchenmännern. In seiner Komposition lehnt das vorliegende Gemälde an ein Tondo an, welches das gleiche Thema darstellt und in der Galleria della Accademia in Venedig verwahrt wird (Durchmesser 198 cm, Inv.Nr. 661). Veronese gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Meister der Spätrenaissance und der venezianischen Malerei. Er wurde 1553 nach Venedig berufen, um zusammen mit anderen Künstlern drei Säle im Dogenpalast zu dekorieren; von 1556 bis 1557 schuf er mit anderen drei Deckengemälde der Biblioteca Marciana, für die er einen Preis aus den Händen Tizians erhalten haben soll. Er malte neben Portraits mythologische Bilder oft mit erotischem Einschlag, insbesondere mehrere Darstellungen von Venus und Mars. 1588 starb er an einer Lungenentzündung. Anmerkung: Ein Gemälde in der gleichen Passform wird in der Galleria della Accademia in Venedig unter der Inv.Nr. 975 verwahrt. Es war zuvor in der Chiesa di S. Signed and dated in the lower left corner. Measurements: 135 x 230 cm; 170 x 267 cm (frame). Ricard Clausells reproduces with singular technical and compositional skill the homonymous painting of Veronese preserved in the Prado Museum. The classical monumentality of the figures, their perfect integration in the architectural frame, the right chromatic ranges that enhance the volumes and the gestural dramaturgy, are characteristics that Clausells learned from Veronese and succeeds in transmitting. In the scene, the anecdote of the last passage of Christ's childhood (Luke 2, 41-50), when at the age of twelve he was taken by his parents to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. Mary and Joseph lost the child, who was later found in the Temple arguing with the doctors. Christ's theological superiority is emphasized by his placement high on the axis of the composition. With his hands he makes a gesture, the so-called digital computation, of enumeration of the arguments put forward before the eyes of the doctors. From the auditorium stands out a bearded old man, who is probably the client. He wears the habit of a knight of the Holy Sepulchre and holds a pilgrim's staff, which suggests that he may have commissioned the painting to commemorate a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Ricard Clausells began his training in 1878 studying at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona and later at the Llotja School. In 1893 he gave painting classes at his home, and in 1897, he edited the second issue of Reus Tranquilo, as he had friends in that city. Between 1900 and 1913 he collaborated in the Semanario Católico de Reus, especially with poems that he sent from Vilafranca, both in Catalan and Spanish. His pictorial work is linked to Vilafranca del Penedès, as he lived there for many years. The City Council commissioned him to create paintings of the illustrious sons of the city, and in 1901 the Gallery of illustrious Vilafranquins was inaugurated. In 1910 he went to live permanently in Sant Feliu with his mother. In this town he painted several religious paintings for churches in Sant Feliu and Vilafranca. From 1915 he decorated the ceiling of the Hall of Sessions of the Town Hall of Vilafranca. When his mother died in 1917, he gave drawing and painting classes at the Asilo Duran, a reform school in Sant Feliu. In 1923 he married Josefina Sanromà from Reus in Barcelona. He did not stop making exhibitions, both in Vilafranca and Sant Feliu and also in Barcelona.
