    Est: €8,000 - €10,000

FRANS VERVLOET (Belgium, 1795 - Venice, 1872). "St Mark's Square at Sunset, Venice", ca.1840. Oil on hardboard. Signed in the lower right corner. Size: 32 x 46 cm; 44,5 x 57 cm (frame). The iridescent lights of the sunset glimmer over San Marco square, giving an amber varnish to the architecture of the Ducal Palace and the imposing obelisks. Passers-by enjoy the coolness of the evening, with gallant groups and dock workers mingling at that magical hour. In this excellent painting, Frans Vervoloet has managed to combine the heritage of 18th-century Veduism with the contributions of the Posilippo group of landscape painters of which he was a member. In the style of Canaletto, he constructed a play of perspectives with particular emphasis on the panoramic, but he was not so much interested in the quasi cartographic detail of his predecessors as in working on lyrical values through a pictorialist lighting that flirts with Romanticism. The confluence of the pre-photographic precision of the Venetian Vedutists of the previous century with the Posilippo school's emphasis on conveying moods results in a highly evocative urban landscape. Frans Vervloet was a Belgian painter and printmaker. In 1809 he began studying at the Akademie voor Schone Kunsten in Mechelen, where he was also taught by his brother J. J. Vervloet (1790-1869), a genre painter and portraitist. During this early period, he produced both genre works and copies of old masters (including Peter Paul Rubens), although he concentrated mainly on architectural painting, such as the "Installation of Archbishop François Antoine de Méan in Mechelen". Following the great success of this painting, from 1817 onwards he devoted himself to painting church interiors. In 1822 he was awarded a scholarship to study in Italy, where he became more interested in landscape painting and where he spent most of his career. After two years in Rome, Vervloet travelled to Naples in 1824. There he was greatly influenced by the group of painters of the Posillippo School, whose members, in their reaction against the more academic approach to landscape painting of the late 18th century, favoured a more spontaneous approach with an emphasis on plein-air painting. Vervloet settled permanently in Venice in 1854. His work is now in the Museo Correale di Sorrento (NA), Collezione privata, Venice, Museo nazionale di San Martino di Napoli, among other public collections.

    Est: €8,000 - €10,000

DANIEL HERNANDEZ MORILLO (Peru, 1856 - 1932). "Lady", Paris, 1902. Oil on canvas. Signed, dated and located in the lower right corner. Measurements: 81 x 66 cm; 106 x 91 cm (frame). In this work, Daniel Hernández Morillo, Peruvian master trained in the European academic tradition, presents us with exquisite refinement and luminous sensibility the feminine elegance of the Belle Époque. It is an oil on canvas of impeccable workmanship, in which the artist displays his technical mastery at the service of an intimate and enveloping atmosphere. The figure, captured in a closed frame, is shown wrapped in a delicate white mantilla, embroidered with subtle embroidery that plays with the light. The face, with dark eyes, soft features and flesh tones of rosy delicacy, conveys mischievousness with its oblique gaze and smile insinuated in lips finely outlined in carmine. The treatment of color and light reveals the hand of a painter influenced by late French academicism, but who introduces in this work an almost symbolist sensibility. The lighting (soft, golden, as of a sunset sifted by leaves) caresses the iridescent silk of the mantilla and awakens mauve and golden reflections on the canvas, enveloping the figure in a halo of autumnal serenity. The vine leaves that surround her, together with the rose stem subtly arranged, reinforce the idea of a suggested natural environment, where the lady merges with the vegetable in a poetic gesture of evocation. This work, created during the artist's stay in Paris, testifies to his ability to transcend decorative realism and endow his figures with an almost timeless emotional density. It is an example of the transitional painting between academic preciosity and the intimate atmospheres of fin-de-siècle modernism. Daniel Hernández began his training in Lima in 1878, having Leonardo Barbieri as his first teacher. Later he traveled to Paris on a government scholarship. In the French capital he visits Ignacio Merino, who recommends him to go to Italy. Ten years pass between workshops, museums and an intense study, traveling through France, Italy and Spain. He finally settled in Paris, and there he met Fortuny, Padilla and Villegas, Spanish artists whose influence assimilated his painting. During these years he competed in various competitions, obtaining the second medal at the Paris Salon of 1899, the gold medal at the Universal Exposition of 1900 and the Legion of Honor on the same date, awards that demonstrate the acceptance he enjoyed in Europe during the last years of the nineteenth century. Since then, Hernandez was declared Honoris Causa in all the Salons. He was also awarded at the Ibero-American Exposition in Seville. In 1912 he returned to America, working between Montevideo and Buenos Aires, always painting portraits and exhibiting his work. Soon after he returned to Paris, where he lived through the Great War, but he returned to Lima in 1918, called by President Jose Pardo to assume the direction of the recently founded National School of Fine Arts, a position he held until his death in 1932. Daniel Hernández left a varied work, including marine watercolors, landscapes, still lifes and numerous sketches. He also painted many portraits, such as the portrait of Pierola in Paris in 1899. He painted Pardo and other Peruvian leaders, as well as illustrious figures such as Bolivar and Pizarro. His so-called "perezosas" deserve special mention, compositions featuring ladies resting on couches, in environments full of sensuality and richness. With them he won the medals of 1899 and 1900. Hernández developed a precious style with a marked balance between drawing and color, revealing a perfect technical mastery. A man of his time, on the basis of his academicist language appear certain notes of impressionist influence. Daniel Hernández is represented in the Prado Museum in Madrid and in the museum that bears his name in Huancavelica (Peru), as well as in other outstanding Peruvian and foreign art galleries.
