GENARO PÉREZ VILLAAMIL Y DUGUET (El Ferrol, La Coruña, 1807 - Madrid, 1854). "Market day". Oil on panel. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 41 x 30 cm; 63 x 53 cm (frame). This market scene fuses two interesting aspects of Villaamil's painting: on the one hand, the meticulous treatment of Spanish nineteenth-century customs and, on the other hand, the representation of monumental ecclesiastical architecture. As we see in this work, his compositions with churches are characterized by a romantic and scenographic approach, where religious architecture acquires a magnanimous and evocative prominence. The human figures are small and serve to give scale and accentuate the grandeur of the monument, thus reinforcing the romantic tone and the exaltation of Spain's medieval heritage. Genaro Pérez Villaamil was the creator and maximum representative of Spanish romantic landscape painting. In 1823 he joined the army of the liberal government, being wounded in Andalusia and taken to Cadiz as a prisoner of war. He remained there between 1823 and 1830, and attended classes at the Academy of Fine Arts. Prono achieves fame, and is called to Puerto Rico to decorate the Tapia Theater. He returns to Spain in 1833, year in which he meets the Scottish painter David Roberts, who transmits him the British romantic landscape conception, to which he will remain faithful all his life. In 1834 he settled in Madrid, where he actively participated in the artistic world of the Romantic period, achieving a career of growing success. In 1835 he was named academician of merit of San Fernando, and five years later, honorary chamber painter. Between 1840 and 1844 he remained outside Spain, and in Paris he published his "Artistic and Monumental Spain", the most beautiful lithographed travel book of Spanish romanticism. He traveled through France, Belgium and Holland, and the kings of these countries acquired his works. At the fall of Espartero he returns to Spain, and is named knight of the Order of Carlos III, of Leopold of Belgium and of the French Legion of Honor. In 1845 he was appointed director of the Academy of San Fernando and professor of landscape in the same. He attended regularly, with success, the exhibitions of the Academy and the Lyceum, as well as the Paris Salon where, in 1846, he received a critical acclaim from Charles Baudelaire. He died still young, when the romantic landscape conceptions were already in decline. His work has a first pre-Romantic stage (1823 - 1833), during which he made youthful works somewhat eclectic, oscillating between the influence of Flemish painting of the XVII and the French of the XVIII, but always within a broad conception of the landscape, with small popular figures and romantic celajes. The second stage, the romantic one, was in line with contemporary British landscape painting, marked by the predominance of views with architectural motifs wrapped in spectacular celapses, and interiors of monuments with a fantastic atmosphere, all of them generally medieval and populated with popular characters. He was also a pioneer in Spain in the introduction of orientalist themes, of great importance in Europe. Important works of his are preserved in important private collections and institutions such as the Prado Museum, the Moncloa Palace (National Heritage collections), the Romantic Museum in Madrid and the Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, among others.

JENARO PÉREZ VILLAAMIL Y DUGUET (El Ferrol, La Coruña, 1807 - Madrid, 1854). "Interior of a church. Oil on panel. Without signature. Measurements: 24,5 x 21 cm. Jenaro Pérez Villaamil was a Spanish romantic painter specialized in landscapes with medieval architectures and church interiors, a very characteristic genre of the time. The interior presented here is a splendid example of the Gothic style, with its large pointed arcades that guide the faithful. The composition plays with the dim light that filters through the openings, imbuing the sacred space with a mystical atmosphere. This magnificent canvas, which represents a View of Alcalá la Real, is considered by art historiography as one of the best works from the brushes of Jenaro Pérez Villaamil, creator and highest representative of the Spanish romantic landscape. It is signed and dated in the year 1836, when the painter had already been established in Madrid for two years, reaping success thanks to the exhibitions of his works and one year after his appointment as Merit Academician of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. from San Fernando. José Zorrilla praised his painting, achieving great fame on the national scene that would also spread outside of Spain at the time when Baron Isidore-Justin Taylor acquired several of his paintings for the collection of King Louis Philippe of France. The work is already imbued with the British romantic landscape conception, learned with the painter David Roberts, to which he remained faithful throughout his life. In it, as we can see here, the views predominate in which architectural motifs appear wrapped in romantic twilight clouds, dreamy atmospheres and populated by popular characters. GENARO PÉREZ VILLAAMIL Y DUGUET (El Ferrol, La Coruña, 1807 - Madrid, 1854). "Alcazar of Seville". Crayon and charcoal on paper. Preparatory drawing for the book "Artistic and Monumental Spain" (Paris, 1842). Signed and titled in the lower right-hand corner. Size: 13 x 21.5 cm; 37 x 51 cm (frame). Between 1840 and 1844, Pérez Villaamil travelled around Europe, residing for a time in Paris, where he published his "Artistic and Monumental Spain", considered one of the most beautiful lithographed travel books of Spanish Romanticism. The lithographs came out in 1842 in three volumes, with landscape themes and the most outstanding monuments of Spain. The sole author of the drawings was Genaro, and the author of the texts was Patricio de la Escosura. It was sponsored by the Marquis of Remisa. Pérez Villaamil was the creator and leading representative of Spanish Romantic landscape painting. In 1823 he joined the army of the Liberal government, was wounded in Andalusia and was taken to Cadiz as a prisoner of war. He remained there from 1823 to 1830 and attended classes at the Academy of Fine Arts. Prono achieved fame, and was called to Puerto Rico to decorate the Tapia Theatre. He returned to Spain in 1833, the year in which he met the Scottish painter David Roberts, who passed on to him the British Romantic landscape conception to which he remained faithful throughout his life. In 1834 he settled in Madrid, where he took an active part in the artistic world of the Romantic period, achieving a career of growing success. In 1835 he was appointed academician of merit of San Fernando, and five years later, honorary chamber painter. He travelled around France, Belgium and Holland, and the kings of these countries acquired his works. On the fall of Espartero he returned to Spain and was made a knight of the Order of Charles III, of Leopold of Belgium and of the French Legion of Honour. In 1845 he was appointed director of the San Fernando Academy and professor of landscape painting there. He regularly and successfully attended the exhibitions of the Academy and the Lyceum, as well as the Paris Salon where, in 1846, he was praised by Charles Baudelaire. He died at a young age, when the Romantic landscape conceptions were already in decline. His work has a first pre-Romantic period (1823 - 1833), during which he produced youthful, somewhat eclectic works, oscillating between the influence of 17th-century Flemish painting and 18th-century French painting, but always within a broad conception of landscape, with small popular figures and romantic celestial landscapes. The second stage, the Romantic, was in line with contemporary British landscape painting, marked by the predominance of views with architectural motifs enveloped in spectacular celapses and interiors of monuments with a fantastic atmosphere, all of them generally medieval and populated by popular figures. He was also a pioneer in Spain in the introduction of Orientalist themes. Important works by him are kept in the Museo del Prado, the Moncloa Palace (Patrimonio Nacional), the Museo Romántico in Madrid and the Museo de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires.
