EDELLEUTE MIT ZWEI KNABEN VOR EINEM WASSERSCHLOSS Öl auf Kupfer. 27,7 x 40 cm. Dem Malstil ist die Tradition Jan Brueghels d. Ä. (1568–1625) anzusehen. (1481307) (11) David Vinckboons, 1576 Mechelen – 1629 Amsterdam, attributed NOBLEMEN WITH TWO BOYS IN FRONT OF A MOATED CASTLE Oil on copper. 27.7 x 40 cm. The painting style clearly reflects the tradition of Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568 – 1625). In particular, the depiction of the trees, the foliage, and the finer details such as the flock of sheep point to the Brueghel tradition. Similar motifs are known from David Vinckboons, albeit with a livelier approach to the figures.

BAUMLANDSCHAFT MIT FEUCHTFRÖHLICHER HEIMKEHR VON EINEM DORFFEST Öl auf Holz. 43,5 x 63 cm. Jahrhunderts. Literatur: Vgl. Klaus Ertz und Christa Nitze-Ertz, David Vinckboons 1576–1632. Monographie mit kritischem Katalog der Zeichnungen und Gemälde, Lingen 2016. A.R. (1481811) (11) David Vinckboons, 1576 Mechelen – 1629 Amsterdam A WOODED LANDSCAPE WITH A BOISTEROUS RETURN FROM A VILLAGE FESTIVAL Oil on panel. 43.5 x 63 cm. Monogrammed and dated “1629” lower left. Vinckboons' work clearly demonstrates the influence of Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568 – 1625), particularly in the depiction of the gnarled oak foliage, but also in the fusion of landscape and figure painting. Through is close observation of nature and his approach to genre painting, he became a precursor of the Dutch Realist tradition in the 17th century. Literature: cf. DAS UNGLEICHE PAAR Öl auf Holz. 21 x 27 cm. Literatur: Vgl. Vinckboons, David (attr.) Mecheln 1576 - Amsterdam 1632 77 x 106 cm Forest landscape with Venus and Adonis. Oil/panel. Bavarian Private Collection. With an expert report by Dieter Füssl. Entirely embedded in a lush forest landscape, with a clearing in the background, a small, brightly lit pond on the left, with dogs, birds and hares as tiny staffage, David Vinckboons depicts a mythological scene. While resting under a tree, Venus warns her lover Adonis of the dangers of his passion, the hunt for wild animals. She grabs him firmly by his robe to stop him from the impending boar hunt. We know that the jealous Mars in the form of a boar will kill the beautiful Adonis and the badly wounded man will die in the arms of his lover. But with his return from the realm of the underworld (the realm of Proserpina) to the heavenly realm of Venus, the summer begins. As a representative of the following generation, David Vinckboons primarily created landscapes and genre pieces in the Brueghelian tradition, and his rustic, earthy subjects such as the Nest Robbers, Peasant Fairs and Peasant Weddings are still reminiscent of Pieter Breughel the Elder. The landscapes with biblical and mythological themes are often very similar to those of Alexander Keirincx and especially Gillis II van Coninxloo. Vinckboons, David (attr.) Mecheln 1576 - Amsterdam 1632 77 x 106 cm Waldlandschaft. Öl/Holz. Bayerische Privatsammlung.

David Vinckboons, Jan van Londerseel - Flemish Landscape with Christ healing the demoniac

    Est: €420 - €540

Landscape drawn by David Vinckboons (1576-1632), artist influenced by Pieter Breugel the Elder, Hans Bol and Roelant Savery. Engraved by Jan van Londerseel (1578-1625). Subject: Christ healing the demoniac; Christ at the side of a pond at right, cities and mountains in left background. Signed: "David Vinckboins inventor" and "Joannes Londerseel sculpsit" with publishers address of Visscher who used this print in his Royal-Size Bible Series: Historiae Sacrae Veteris et Novi Testamenti. Besides a handful of original plates by mainly Flemish artists, he also attracted a group of engravers to engraved enlarged copies after earlier works that made the major part of his series. This one however is one of the few earlier original plates from around 1600 he used for his Royal Folio Series. It looks like the group with the demoniac was added by Visscher to fit in his publication. The landscape itself is typical for Vinckboons with distant buildings that seem like floating between the water and the distant mountains. In many cases these interesting works from the circle of Coninxloo, Vinckeboons and his pupil Hondecouter are the only ones on the market. These artists originated from the region Antwerp/Mechelen/Brussels and moved to the Northern Netherlands in their later carreer, undoubltly caused by the religious troubles in the South.

JEPHTHAHS TOCHTER BEGRÜSST IHREN VATER NACH DESSEN RÜCKKEHR VON DER SCHLACHT Öl auf Holz. 45,5 x 78,5 cm.

DAVID VINCKBOONS the Elder (Mechelen 1576–1632 Amsterdam) A broad mountain landscape with peasants returning from a fair. Oil on panel. 63.8 × 94 cm. Provenance: Private collection, Switzerland. ------------------------------------------------- DAVID VINCKBOONS d. Ä. (Mechelen 1576–1632 Amsterdam) Weite Berglandschaft mit Rückkehr der Bauern von der Kirmes. Öl auf Holz. 63,8 × 94 cm. Provenienz: Schweizer Privatbesitz.

A copy after this composition, which last appeared on the market in 2016, further attests to its popularity.2 A merry group of nine men and women, accompanied by a dog, gather around a table laden with oysters and wine, among other delicacies. While one gentleman proffers his roemer towards the sky, another, on the right, fingers his lute beside a lady who sings from a book. The grand building in the background underscores the extravagance of the scene. Some scholars have proposed that this composition alludes to the parable of The Prodigal Son among the Harlots.3 Although this cannot be discerned with certainty, several elements support this hypothesis: the proximity between the figures, the oysters - both on the table and littered on the ground - as an aphrodisiac, and the free flowing wine.41 Inv. no. David Vinckboons, Tavern Scene "Boerenverdriet" or "Peasant Sorrow"

    Est: €70,000 - €90,000

David Vinckboons repeatedly thematised the suffering of the Netherlandish rural population, who were tortured and killed by Spanish soldiers ("Boerenverdriet" or "Peasant Sorrow"). Starting in 1568, the rebellious Netherlands entered into the Eighty Years' War with Spain. Vinckboons and his family were themselves victims of this war and fled from Spanish-occupied Antwerp to the northern Netherlands in 1585. Vinckboons created counterparts depicting peasants who have decided to fight back and drive the soldiers and their entourage out of their homes ("Boerenvreugd" or "Peasant Joy"). In the present composition, the painter also takes the side of the suffering population. A tavern is shown in which a richly dressed company is being spoilt with food and drink. It could be a family of the Spanish occupiers celebrating at the expense of the rural population. A poor man carrying a basket is expelled from the room under threat of violence. In the foreground, a begging woman kneels in front of a box filled with jewellery and money and pleads for alms. The present painting "Peasant Sorrow" may have had a counterpart depicting the "Peasant Joy", as is the case with an almost identical version from 1609 with similar dimensions. These two panels, which were on the art market in 2005, may be the earliest version of the subject (see Klaus Ertz: David Vinckboons, Lingen 2016, nos. 160 and 161). There is another pair of paintings in the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum (inv. nos. SK-A-1351 and -1352), but these have been dated to around 1619 or later on the basis of dendrological examination and were possibly painted by the artist's workshop (see Klaus Ertz, op. cit., nos. 162 and 163, here still dated around 1609 and with full attribution). David Vinckboon's composition is in the South Netherlandish tradition of detailed depictions of plundered villages, which reflect the contemporary conflict between soldiers and peasants. Unlike Marten van Cleve before him, he considerably reduced the number of figures and placed them closer to the picture plane, thus involving the viewer more closely in the action. It is possible that Vinckboons, who had connections to the literary world of Amsterdam, was inspired by the contemporary literature on the Twelve Years' Truce (1609 to 1621). This dealt extensively with the problematic relationship between peasant and soldier.
