  • JOHN ALFRED VINTER (BRITISH, 1828-1905) PORTRAIT OF A LADY
    Nov. 22, 2025

JOHN ALFRED VINTER (BRITISH, 1828-1905) PORTRAIT OF A LADY

    Est: $300 - $500

JOHN ALFRED VINTER (BRITISH, 1828-1905) PORTRAIT OF A LADY, oil on canvas, a three-quarter length depiction of a finely-appointed lady resting her arm on a pillow beside an urn. A faint signature lower left appears to read "V" with other very faint letters around it being barely visible; the stretcher bears an inscription identifying the artist and his location in London. Housed in a period, possibly original gilt frame. Circa 1875. 48" x 38" sight, 60 1/4" x 50 1/4" OA. Catalogue Note: The consignor purchased this painting at the 1988 auction of the John Marshall Hotel in Richmond, VA, and notes that he believes this portrait depicts the granddaughter-in-law of Chief Justice John Marshall, wife of John Marshall IV. The most likely person who fits this description is Christina Wilhelmina Jones Marshall (1838-1907), second wife of John Marshall (1830-1902). With the painting having been executed by a known English artist, it makes this somewhat difficult to prove the sitter's identification, though it is possible that this was painted while the couple was overseas or when (and if) Vinter was in America.
