Gießen – 1808 Paris Öl auf Leinwand. Unsigniert. In einem goldfarbenen, klassizistischen Rahmen mit Akanthusapplikationen. Das vorliegende Gemälde steht an fünfter Position einer langen Rezeptionskette. An erster Stelle steht der bekannte Genremaler Adriaen van Ostade und sein Gemälde "Wandernde Musikanten" (Privatbesitz). Dieses wurde im Druck von Cornelis Visscher II verbreitet (z.B. British Museum, 36,6 x 30,6 cm, 1839,0413.188) . Einer der Abzüge diente wiederum dem Dresdner Hofmaler Dietrich als Vorlage, der diese leicht abwandelte und um Figuren bereicherte. Dietrichs "Wandernde Musikanten" befinden sich heute in der National Gallery London (1745, 43,3 x 33 cm, Öl auf Holz, NG205). Es war ursprünglich jedoch im Besitz seines Freundes Johann Georg Wille, der nach der Tafel einen Kupferstich anfertigte (z.B. SKD, Pl. 48,6 x 35,2 cm, InfNr. A 23090 a). Mit ziemlicher Sicherheit diente einer der Kupferstiche dem Maler des vorliegenden Gemäldes als Vorlage, wo ebenfalls ein Seil um das Fass u.li. gewickelt ist und das Gefäß darauf seltsam verformt erscheint. Beides ist in der Londoner Tafel nicht der Fall. Gemeinsam mit Adriaen Brouwer war er Schüler von Frans Hals, in dessen Art war er bis gegen 1639 tätig. Danach schloss er sich an die Malweise Rembrandts an. Diese kam seiner Neigung für die malerische Umsetzung des Helldunkels eher entgegen. Ostade schuf eine große Zahl von meist humoristischen Genrebildern kleinen Formats sowie zahlreiche Aquarelle, getuschte Federzeichnungen und Radierungen. Cornelis Visscher II 1629 Haarlem – 1658 Amsterdam Niederländischer Kupferstecher und Bildniszeichner, Bruder von Johannes und Lambert Visscher. Nach der Bildung unter Pieter Claesz Soutman arbeitet er ab 1650 selbstständig und ist zwischen 1655 und 1658 in Amsterdam tätig. Johann Georg Wille 1715 Biebertal b. Gießen – 1808 Paris Deutscher Kupferstecher. Wille lernte in seinem Geburtsort zunächst das Büchsenmacherhandwerk und wurde in Straßburg mit dem Kupferstecher Georg Friedrich Schmidt bekannt. Mit demselben ging er nach Paris und wurde hier vom Maler Hyacinthe Rigaud zu Versuchen im Kupferstechen veranlasst. Das erste Blatt, ihn bekannt machende Blatt war das Bildnis des Marschalls Louis-Charles-Auguste Fouquet de Belle-Isle. Bald stach er für die berühmtesten französischen Maler ihre Werke nach. Ebenso führte er Stiche nach Bildern älterer Meister aus. Wille war Hofkupferstecher des Königs von Frankreich, des deutschen Kaisers und des Königs von Dänemark. 1746 besuchte er Deutschland, kehrte aber 1747 wieder nach Paris zurück. Viele bedeutende Kupferstecher, darunter J. G. von Müller, Charles Clément Bervic, Jakob Matthias Schmutzer, Dunker, Heinrich Guttenberg und François Robert Ingouf, waren seine Schüler. Napoleon I. ernannte ihn zum Ritter der Ehrenlegion.

[CURIOSA] VISSCHER, Cornelis (1629-1658). The Rat-Catcher. [c. 1650].

The Rat-Catcher is a vivid and original genre scene engraved by Visscher, portraying a grotesque character accompanied by a dog and a young assistant. The composition's caricatural traits made it highly popular, to the point that it was later reissued as a mezzotint by Richard Houston in 18th-century London. The inscription humorously mocks the unsettling appearance of the main figure, asking who among the three ; the man, the dog, or the boy ; is the oddest. Engraving (375 x 310mm). Trimmed to the plate and mounted within a frame (repairs to lower margin).

A large and finely made engraving composed by Dutch Golden Age Engraver Cornelis Visscher (1629-1658) depicting the 'Portrait of Andrea di Odoni' by Italian Renaissance artist Lorenzo Lotto (1480-1557). Andrea di Odoni was a collector of antiquities during the Renaissance and is pictured here amongst much of his collection, many of which are well known to this day. Hidden beneath the matting is an old ink inscription to the lower part of the engraved page which reads 'Bandinelli Baccio'. Any association with this engraving and said Italian Renaissance artist is unclear. An identical copy of this engraving can be found at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Vischer Sculpebat", auf Papier kaschiert, schmutzspurig und Spuren von Wurmfraß, unter Passepartout montiert, Darstellungsmaße ohne Schrift ca. 23 x 18,5 cm. Künstlerinfo: niederl. Kupferstecher (1629 Haarlem oder Amsterdam bis um 1662), vermutlich Schüler von Pieter Claesz Soutman, ab 1653 Mitglied der Lukasgilde, die Kupferstecher Jan de Visscher und Lambert Visscher waren seine Brüder, Quelle: Thieme-Becker und Wikipedia. Cornelis Visscher, Pair of Depictions of Saints Portrait of St Mark with a Lion in the Background and St John with an Eagle, copper engravings, mid 17th century, inscribed below the depiction and in the plate on the right "Corn. A very good, dark and well-inked impression with strong contrasts. Widely-collected for his detailed engraved portraits of prominent figures of his day, Visscher's (1629-1658) skill as a printmaker is evident in this image which captures the essence of a resting cat, its slumber not distracted by the cunning mouse in the background.
