Heinrich Vogeler 1872 Bremen - 1942 Kazakhstan - "Love" - (1896) Etching/paper. 35 x 37 cm, 39 x 40 cm (mount opening). 62.5 x 60 cm (dimensions with frame). Signed lower right: H. Vogeler. Signed lower left: O. Felsing Berlin printed. Monogram in print lower right: HV. Mount. Framed under glass. Browned. Minimally wavy. - Lit.: Rief 13 Heinrich Vogeler was a German painter, graphic artist, architect, designer, educator, writer, and socialist. The multi-talented artist is particularly known for his works from the Art Nouveau period. He belongs to the first generation of the Worpswede artists' colony. During the First World War, he developed an expressionist painting style, and from the early 1920s, after visits to Moscow, he created complex images with political motifs oriented towards Cubism and Futurism. After finally moving to Moscow in 1931, he began to paint in the style of Socialist Realism demanded by the Soviet Union. After moving to Moscow, he became involved in cultural and political activities there, including participating in the anti-fascist movement against Hitler. After the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, he was forcibly evacuated by the NKVD to Kazakhstan, like many other Germans. He died there, weakened by hard physical labor.
