(Imst 1840–1895 Graz) “Frühling”, c. 1886, signed Theod. d. Hörmann, verso titled on the stretcher “Frühling, Umgebung v. Wien”, with the addresses of the artist in Vienna and Paris “Theodor von Hörmann, Wien, 4. B., Heugasse 4/ Paris, 25 Boulevard Montparnasse”, oil on canvas, 36 x 59 cm, framed Provenance: Collection Konrad (1861-1904) and Marie Widter, née. Engelhart (1870-1956), Vienna; By inheritance to Wolfgang Widter (1901-1945), General Manager of the Schwechat Brewery, Vienna; Thence by descent– Private Collection, Austria; Sale, im Kinsky, Vienna, 24 April 2018, lot 911; Private Collection, Vienna. Catalogued in: Theodor von Hörmann Archive, no. I.211-E It is an annual experience when, after winter, the sun makes nature glow with renewed strength: The bright green of the meadows, the colourful splashes of pink, white and yellow blossoms combine with the refreshing atmosphere when warmth meets the still cool air. Theodor von Hörmann made spring the subject of this special painting in a garden near Vienna, interweaving external and internal experiences. For in his own life, spring had arrived as well. In 1883 he had married Laura Bertuch, a wealthy heiress, which enabled him to retire as an officer and teacher in St. Pölten. The time had finally come for him to devote himself entirely to painting. In 1884, the couple moved to Vienna and took a flat in Heugasse, today’s Prinz Eugenstrasse near Schwarzenbergplatz. In these first years as a free artists, light played a new, equally liberated and all-pervading role in his paintings. The “Spring” demonstrates this in an exemplary way and is one of the early works in which Hörmann’s new signature style is clearly recognizable. His pursuit of the “truth” of appearances is now achieved through a combination of intense, impulsively applied colors and a strict, organizing framework of lines, as conveyed by the rhythmically arranged trees. The painting was likely created just before his departure to Paris in 1886, where he would live and work for the next four years in Rue de Montparnasse. The note of the address on the stretcher might be an indication that Hörmann took the “Spring” with him to France, to use it for exhibitions or as a “business card.”
