John Von Wicht New York / Germany, (1888-1970) untitled abstract oil on paper signed lower right. From Ask Art: A painter of abstraction expression, muralist, mosaic and stained glass artist and printmaker, John Von Wicht was born in Germany and in 1923, immigrated to New York City where he was based during most of his career. In Darmstadt, he attended the Bauhaus School and in Berlin, the Academy of Fine Arts. He also studied in a private school of the Grand Duke of Hesse in 1908. During World War I, serving in the German army, he was wounded, which left him partially paralyzed. In New York City in the 1930s, John Von Wicht was a WPA (Federal Arts Project) artist for radio station WNYC and worked with Stuart Davis, Byron Browne and Louis Schanker. His murals, mosaics and stained glass are in many cities including the Federal Court House in Knoxville, Tennessee and the Pennsylvania Railroad Station in Trenton, New Jersey. In 1954, Von Wicht was honored with a residency at the MacDowell Colony. In 1951 and 1952, he taught at the Art Students League in New York and in 1953, the John Herron Art Institute. Provenance: Private collection, Chicago. Von Wicht (1888-1970) was born in Germany. He immigrated to the United States in the 1930s, settling in New York and working under the auspices of the Works Progress Administration, creating works for the mural division alongside artists such as Stuart Davis (1892-1964) and Byron Browne (1907-1961). His shift to purely non-objective abstraction began with his "Force" series in the late 1930s. By the 1940s, von Wicht was among the first wave of New York-based artists to embrace Abstract Expressionism, to which he adhered throughout the remainder of his career.

Wicht', 28.5 x 34.5 cm (unframed) (ARR) Provenance: with Gimpel Fils, London, GF17910; private collection Note: the artist moved to the US in the 1920s and exhibited widely there and internationally throughout the 20th century. This study most likely dates from the 1950s when the artist was able to devote himself fully to painting and developed his distinct approach to abstraction that melded geometric form with an intuitive approach, influence by Eastern calligraphy. Works by the artist are in the collections of the British Museum and MoMA, New York.
