THOMAS MORE ENGRAVING, VORSTERMAN Lucas Vorsterman the Elder (Flemish 1595-1675) Portrait of Sir Thomas More – 1631 Engraving The lower margin heavily inscribed Sheet size: 10.25 x 6.8 inches (26 x17.5cm). Overall including glazed gilt frame 14.75 x 11.25 inches (37.5 x 28.5cm) The offered etching was executed by Vorsterman after the painting by Hans Holbein (1497–1543). Sir Thomas More (1478–1535) was a prominent English humanist, statesman, scholar, and martyr. Best known for his 1516 masterpiece Utopia, which popularized the term for an ideal society, he served as Lord Chancellor to King Henry VIII. He was executed in 1535 for refusing to recognize the King as the Supreme Head of the Church of England, remaining steadfast in his Catholic faith.

entro importante cornice in legno intagliato \“(…) La composizione della versione milanese è identica a un dipinto dell'Art Institute di Chicago, su tavola e di misure cm 114,5x91,5, accettato come opera originale di Rubens. ¶La composizione era popolare: fu ampiamente diffusa attraverso un'incisione (1620) di Lucas Vorsterman (1595-1675), con almeno nove versioni conosciute, dipinte successivamente alla tavola di Chicago, la maggior parte delle quali di dimensioni simili, con solo una piccola area sopra le teste di San Giuseppe e della Madonna. ¶La versione di Milano è un’eccezione (anche se non unica) essendo più alta delle altre versioni di 15,5 cm, presentando un’area più ampia sopra le teste. (…)¶Il riferimento inventariale fornisce un termine ante quem del 1620 per la versione di Chicago, stilisticamente collocabile intorno al 1615.¶Sebbene sia da tenere presente che l'appiattimento della superficie pittorica durante il trasferimento influisca negativamente sull'aspetto del dipinto, un confronto tra la modalità di esecuzione della tavola di Chicago e la versione di Milano mostra che quest'ultima sia un’opera realizzata dalla bottega. ¶Anche tenendo conto del fatto che il dipinto di Chicago è eseguito in maniera più sciolta e libera, le differenze di qualità tra i due sono notevoli.¶Ciò è evidente in aree come i capelli dei due bambini, che nel dipinto di Milano è mancante della pennellata sciolta e più spontanea che contraddistingue l'originale, che enfatizza la consistenza delle singole ciocche di capelli; la resa del panneggio verde drappeggiato sul cappuccio della culla manca della qualità tridimensionale della versione di Chicago; allo stesso modo la struttura e la trama della pelle di animale che avvolge San Giovanni sono elementi totalmente assenti nella versione di Milano. ¶Un ultimo esempio è il velo di garza nera indossato dalla Vergine, dove gli sforzi del pittore della versione milanese per imitare la resa sicura di Ruben della materia trasparente non sono del tutto riusciti.¶La diversa tecnica è particolarmente evidente nell'esecuzione dei volti, soprattutto nel confronto tra quelli di Sant'Anna. Durante l'esecuzione della versione di Chicago, Rubens ha utilizzato un’imprimitura di base marrone per creare le aree in ombra del collo, del mento e delle guance infossate e ha applicato il grigio per indicare le pieghe più morbide della pelle, il pittore della versione di Milano ha invece semplicemente applicato una vernice marrone scuro nel tentativo di imitare lo stesso effetto.¶¶Lo sfondo architettonico della versione milanese è un'indizio del fatto che un buon assistente di bottega sia il responsabile della sua esecuzione. La divisione verticale dello sfondo in due metà è una caratteristica della versione di Chicago e di tutte le copie conosciute: ma, mentre tutte mostrano il cielo blu sul lato destro e lo sfondo marrone a sinistra, nella versione di Chicago sembra che quest'area sia stata lasciata incompiuta. In generale, pare che Rubens abbia concesso agli assistenti di studio, incaricati di realizzare le copie, un certo grado di libertà nel modo in cui decidere di gestire le aree meno importanti, come lo sfondo architettonico. La maggior parte delle copie dopo la composizione di Chicago sembrano mostrare un muro o un pilastro semplice, ma il pittore responsabile della versione di Milano ha ideato una disposizione più complessa, che include una semicolonna dietro la Vergine e quella che potrebbe essere una nicchia dietro Sant'Anna. ¶¶Concludo che la Sacra Famiglia di Milano con San Giovanni Battista e Sant'Anna sia una buona copia di bottega, dipinta alla fine degli anni '10 o all'inizio degli anni '20.\”
