Appears to be depicting the interior of a home with rich furnishings and decoration dated on the wall "Anna 1559" and with a figure on another wall with the inscription above it "St. Guris Ghulde." Descended in a local NH family until now.

Christie'sPortrait of Elizabeth, Princess of Hesse and the Rhine (1864-1918) - a study indistinctly signed lower right Juliaan De Vriendt, and inscribed on the cardboard backing Premiere esquisse d'aprŠs nature fait au Palais St. Petersburg black chalk on blueish paper 44 x 26.5 cm NOTES As indicated on the cardboard backing, the present lot was executed in Saint Petersbourg. It can be dated to 1899, when the artist spent several weeks in Saint Petersbourg to paint the portrait of Princess Elisabeth. He had received this commission after the Princess' husband, Grand Duke Sergei Aleksandrovich had seen De Vriendt's work in an exhibition of Flemish Art which was held in the same city the year before (see D. Peeters, Julliaan De Vriendt, pp. 87/88). The sitter married the Grand Duke in 1884 and became a nun after his assassination in 1905. She herself was murdered in 1918. After her death her body was laid to rest in Jerusalem. She was canonised by the Moscow patriarchate in 1994. See illustration.
