        Wadsworth, Edward: Invention

        Est: €700 - €900

Invention Farbholzschnitt auf Velin, auf Karton aufgewalzt. 1917. 10,5 x 8 cm (12,3 x 9,5 cm). Auflage wohl 10 Ex. Colnaghi 120. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

        Est: £1,500 - £2,500

EDWARD WADSWORTH (1889–1949) Head, Rupert Doone wood engraving, unframed image: 13.5 x 7.3 cm (5 1/4 x 2 3/4 in) sheet: 19.5 x 14 cm (7 3/4 x 5 1/2 in) Originally published in 1921 Rupert Doone was a dancer and choreographer and the director of ballet at the Group Theatre Footnote: O. Raymond Drey's comments written on the series can be found below: These fourteen examples of Mr. Edward Wadsworth's work were selected by the Editor, with the Artist's approval, printed by Mr. Walter Bradley at the Moreland Press Ltd. and published by Mr. Herbert Furst at the Little Art Rooms, 8 Duke Street, London, W.C.2, April 1921. There is also a Special Edition consisting of a set of 14 proofs, printed a Japanese paper, limited to 30 copies, numbered and signed by the Artist. Price 3 guineas. If one were to ask why Edward Wadsworth had taken to cutting on wood, the answer would be that the character of his draughtsmanship and also of his painting is of a kind that harmonizes admirably with the particular quality of line and the distribution of black and white masses that can be achieved with the wood block. Before the present revival of wood-cutting the medium was generally resorted to, not because of qualities peculiar to itself, but because it afforded an opportunity for displaying how craftily the woodcutter could imitate, in this much more obdurate material, the fine effects of light and shadow obtained with cross-hatching, stippling, etc., by the various methods of metal-plate engraving. Now anyone who has followed with an atom of appreciation the development of Wadsworth's art with the brush and pencil will have noticed that interest in elements of form has always been the principal factor in his scale of values, and since the wood-cut provides the starkest means for dealing with the relationship of masses, actually compelling the artist to adapt his handiwork straitly to this end, its attraction for him becomes obvious. Nor is it surprising to find that all the prints in this book have been taken from blocks cut "on the plank," that is to say, in the direction of the grain instead of, as is the case of wood-engraving, on the cross section. Here again Wadsworth's choice seems thoroughly in keeping with his feeling for design, which has alwyas tended towards freedom and boldness of effect. As the spectator becomes accustomed to thse wood-cuts he will notice with constantly increasing pleasure the intimate sequence and cohesion of the firm, black out lines which divide and shape so lumionously the revealing spaces of light. These irregular black and white mosaics do not yield up all their secrets to the first glance, but the longer they are studied the more consicous does one become of the completeness of the aritst's conception. The designs are full of a brilliant movement which at first may seem an end in itself, but which is quickly seen to be controlled by a clearly formulated logic of arrangement which is only at a short remove from literal accuracy. It is just here, between the literal appearance of the scene itself, and its orgnaization within the space of the wood-block, that the creative effort of the artist takes shape and substance. If Wadsworth were called upon to justify his neglect of literal representation he could answer consclusively that the wood-block provides a means peculiar to itself of making lively patterns in black and white, and that short of this the medium could only serve to imitate a linear convention more proper to drawing. But really there is no need for him to justify himself at all. His woodcuts, which so delightfully reflect his feeling for the liveliness and energy of the scenes he has depicted, will fully justify his method to all who have it in them to enjoy the quality of his vision.

Painted circa February 1938. PROVENANCE: with City Art Gallery, Wakefeld. Anonymous sale, Bonhams, London, 3 December 2002, lot 71. with Rowley Gallery, London. with Osborne Samuel, London, where purchased by Jeremy Lancaster in 2007. EXHIBITED: London, Arthur Tooth & Sons, An Exhibition of Tempera Paintings by Edward Wadsworth, April - May 1938, no. 14. London, Rowley Gallery, no. 33, catalogue not traced. LITERATURE: B. Wadsworth, Edward Wadsworth: A Painter's Life, Salisbury, 1989, no. W/A 197. J. Black, Edward Wadsworth, Form, Feeling and Calculation, The Complete Paintings and Drawings, London, 2005, p. 196, no. 366, illustrated. The sea was a point of consistency in Wadsworth’s oeuvre, with marine objects becoming important motifs throughout his career. This interest began in 1918, when he worked on ‘dazzle-camoufage’ for ships in Bristol and Liverpool, later manifesting itself in his art in the 1920s when he began working on a series of tempera harbour scenes and still-life paintings, and in 1936 Wadsworth was commissioned to paint two works for the frst and cabin class Smoke Rooms for the new liner, Queen Mary. In the 1930s, Wadsworth painted a series of still-lifes taking real life nautical instruments and marine subjects and combining them in unexpected ways to create unusual compositionally confgured works. Wadsworth had a collection of maritime equipment and other ephemera, which he would arrange in his studio to paint from, later inserting imaginary seascapes into the backgrounds, as seen in the present work. Les Plats du Jour and other works of this period in particular show Wadsworth’s knowledge and enthusiasm for European art trends, most notably Surrealism. He had close associations with Pierre Roy, Jean Metzinger and in particular Giorgio de Chirico, whom he greatly admired, and corresponded with in 1928 on the subject of tempera painting. He would also no doubt have seen his one-man exhibition in October - November 1928 at Arthur Tooth & Sons, who by this time was representing Wadsworth. Like his Surrealist compatriots, Wadsworth laid particular emphasis on the isolation and aggrandisement of the object, paying great attention to the contrasting relative weights, textures and forms of his motifs. He also enjoyed playing with perspective and the sense of spatial distance, often depicting still-life objects at close range granting them with a Surrealist quality, making them seem larger than they really are.

AR Edward Wadsworth (British, 1889-1949) Yorkshire Village

        Est: £8,000 - £12,000

Edward Wadsworth (British, 1889-1949) Yorkshire Village (Colnaghi 103b; Greenwood W6) The rare woodcut printed in steel blue and black, 1914, on Japan paper, signed and dated in pencil, pale mount-staining in the margins, otherwise in good condition Block 197 x 120mm; Sheet 266 x 182mm. The image of houses on a hill references the work of Cézanne, though the pure abstract forms transcend those of early Cubism. The eye can pick out facades and rooftops, but the compact pyramidal shape, constructed of hard lines and sharp angles and devoid of architectural details, gives the appearance of one geometric form. There was also an edition printed in green and black.

Edward Wadsworth (British, 1889-1949) Mytholmroyd (Colnaghi 101; Greenwood W4) The rare woodcut printed in black and grey, circa 1914, on brown wove paper, signed and dated in pencil, some staining in the margins, otherwise in good conditionBlock 215 x 175mm; Sheet 324 x 225mm. As an exponent of the Vorticist movement, Wadsworth sought to capture the dynamism of the modern machine age through abstraction and his woodcuts are regarded as a high point of innovation and precision in 20th Century printmaking. Wadsworth was born in Yorkshire, where his father ran a textile mill, so he was familiar with the industrial forms of its manufacturing towns, like Mytholmroyd. He studied engineering draughtsmanship which gave him an appreciation of the technical precision required for woodcut production and how well this translated into abstract imagery. In this woodcut we recognize the chimneys and factory roofs of the town, but there is a clear abstract handling in the geometric forms and restricted colour palette.Further impressions were printed on cream paper and grey-green paper. This is the first known impression to appear at auction which is dated.
