Josef Wagner-Höhenberg was a genre, portrait and historical painter born in Höhenberg, Germany in 1870. Father of the genre painter Fritz Wagner (1896-1967). Studied at the Florence Academy of Art as well as in Munich and later became a member of the Munich school of painting. Wagner-Höhenberg specialized in painting finely detailed interior scenes. Due to his ability to capture emotion and give portrait-like features to his subjects he is considered one of the most gifted 19th-century German artists of his era. Examples of his work can be found in many private and public art collections including the Witt Library. Interior scene depicting three clericks, singing, playing the flute and guitar. Painted with attention to detail, manner characteristic for Wagner. Signed bottom-right: “Wagner-Hohenberg”. In original black frame. Provenance: Swedish collection.

Retouches can be found in the upper area of the background, as well as of the left sleeve of the robe. In the area of the backrest of the chair a scratch is shown. Josef Wagner-Höhenberg (1870-1939) Josef Wagner-Höhenberg worked as a church interior and genre painter in Munich. He partially received his academic and artistic training in Florence. As a member of the Munich school of painting he attained great success with his popular genre paintings, whose figures were fitted with portrait-like features. Four older men are depicted in a village inn, gathered around a table. Figures in traditional clothing and depictions from Bavarian social life are typical elements in the work of Wagner-Höhenberg: the artist shows here the ability to render the facial expressions and gestures of the sitters a lively touch. The painting is in good condition and appears in fresh colors. It is signed lower right 'Wagner-Höhenberg'. The canvas is relined and has been covered by a narrow strip of paper on the edges. Inspection under UV light reveals further small retouchings at the clothing of the left sitter and some scattered tiny stains. The wooden frame shows only small traces of age and use.
