Inez Nathaniel Walker, Girl Smoking a Cigarette [Outsider Art - Self-Taught] (New York, 1977) Portrait of a Girl Smoking a Cigarette by Inez Nathaniel Walker (1907–1990), Port Byron, New York, 1977. Signed and dated lower right. Marker and color pencil on found paper. Framed behind plexiglass. Provenance: Collection of Roger McLane, Columbus, Ohio. Born into poverty in Sumter, South Carolina, Inez Nathaniel-Walker was a self-taught artist whose career began while serving a prison sentence after being convicted of criminally negligent homicide for killing a man who had abused her. Her work was featured in the landmark exhibition Black Folk Art in America: 1930–1980 and is represented today in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the American Folk Art Museum, the High Museum of Art, and numerous other institutions.

Good condition. Born into poverty in South Carolina, she eventually moved to Port Byron, NY to work in a factory. She was convicted of manslaughter for killing an abusive partner in 1971. In prison, she learned how to draw, and began her art career. She is one of the most prominent African-American Folk Artists.

She began drawing while incarcerated (for killing an abuser) at Bedford Hills Correctional Prison from 1971-73. Known for her intricate pencil work and tiny hands most of her drawings were of women. This earlier image before her marriage to Walker are of note because of double images involving a man and child. Prov: Michael Hall editor of " Artist Outsider" via Lynne Bailey, Prison Art Collector. Ref: Smithsonian Collection. From the lifetime collection of living folk artist Dewey Blocksma, Beulah, Michigan. Blocksma acquired most pieces directly from the artists.
