Coral Gables AuctionMartha Walter (American, 1875–1976) On the Beach Signed 'Martha Walter' bottom right, watercolor on paper Sheet size: 9 3/4 x 12 3/4 in. (24.8 x 32.4cm) Provenance Private Estate, Illinois. Freeman's, Philadelphia, sale of December 4, 2011, lot 116. Acquired directly from the above sale. Collection of Philip D. Jamison, Jr., West Chester, Pennsylvania. Property from the Estate of Philip D. Jamison, Jr. Frame: 17 3/8 x 19 1/8 x 3/4 in. The work is framed under glass and matted. In generally fair to good condition. The sheet is affixed to the verso f the mat via two thin pieces of white linen tape at upper left and upper right corners. It is resting (not affixed) on a thicker piece of board, to give some more rigidity to the work. Part of the sheet is unevenly cut, the outer bottom and right edges of sheet with slightly deckled edges. With prominent foxing spots/diffuse toned areas - mostly in the sky, but also in the lower half of the work, and clusters of discoloration, mainly at lower center right. The sheet also has prominent foxing verso, with clear tape pieces along one side and top edge verso, affixed to mat, along with seven brown paper tape remnants affixed to outer top and bottom edges of sheet - not affixed to undermat - on the verso. Outer edges of sheet have tack holes. Outer left upper edge has an incised line just outside the edge of the sheet, apparently from a box cutter, though this 'cut' does NOT extend through to the front of the sheet and is concealed by the overmat. Just within outer edges of sheet are pencil lines, which appear to follow the outline of the overmat (and which may be part of the artist's working process).
