Henry Walton (British, 1746-1814) A group of three portrait studies of children from the Pelham family Anne Pelham; Frances Pelham; and John Cressett-Pelham oil on panel, oval (23cm x 18.5cm and similar; 29 x 23.5cm framed) (3) Provenance: The collection of James Thursby-Pelham Esq. and thence by descent. Condition Report: Anne Pelham: Small scattered specks of retouching to the sitter's face, hair, dress and the background. Surface dirt and discolouration, may benefit from a light clean. Panel slightly bowed at top. Frances Pelham: Craquelure. A little surface dirt and varnish discolouration. There are some small abrasions to the background in the upper right and upper left. John Cressett-Pelham: Under raking light the finish is uneven with some infiilling evident. The paintings have not been viewed under UV light, for a full report please contact the department.

Henry Walton, Two Portraits of Gentlemen

Henry Walton, British 1746-1813- Two Portraits of Gentlemen; the first oil on iron, the second oil on copper, ovals, the first bears an old indistinctly inscribed label on the reverse, the first 23.4 x 18 cm., the second 23.5 x 18.2 cm. two (2), (unframed). Provenance: Collection of Sir George Beaumont (1753-1827). By descent to Felicity Owen (1926-2019). From whom purchased by Sabin Galleries Ltd., London in July 1967. Note: Alongside larger genre and conversation scenes, Walton's output consists largely of small oval portrait studies like the present works. The composition of these oils, each with a three-quarter length sitter set against a plain background, places the viewer's attention squarely on the sitter, creating a palpable sense of connection and conversation between the two. The present works were from the collection of Sir George Beaumont, an important collector and a key figure in the establishment of London's National Gallery. They reached the present owner via Felicity Owen, an art historian, collector, and direct descendant of Beaumont.

oil on canvas (Dimensions: 74 x 62 cm) (74 x 62 cm) Footnote: Provenance: Sotheby's, London, 23 March 1949; Moulton Grange, Pitsford, Northamptonshire Rebecca Herring's husband, John Herring, was Sheriff of the City of Norwich in 1786. Her memorial plaque is in the north aisle of the Church of St George, Colegate, Norwich. Condition report: Oil on canvas which is appears to be lined. The canvas has good tension and is in plane. The paint layers are stable but appear to have suffered from damage and flaking in the past, notably along the lower edge. Retouchings in this area are cool and grey compared to the surrounding paint layer. Other areas of retouching are also slightly milky and mismatched, notably in the sitter's face. The varnish is glossy and clear. There is some abrasion and cracking to the decorative surface of the frame.

Portrait of Mr. Seward, full-length, seated in an armchair beside a table, holding an open book in his right hand oil on canvas 30 x 25 in. (76.2 x 63.5 cm.) PROVENANCE Mrs. Kenrick. with Thos. Agnews & Son Ltd., London (no. 9367). EXHIBITION Canterbury, 1937, lent by Mrs Kenrick (according to an old label attached to the stretcher). NOTES John Sunderland has suggested that this portrait is by John Hamilton Mortimer. The tightly modelled features and clothes, and the languid pose of the sitter recall Mortimer's portrait of M. Masson, the French Tennis Player (J. Sunderland, John Hamilton Mortimer, his life and works, Walpole Society, LII, pl. 42). Carpets feature rarely in the furnishings of Mortimer's portraits, although The Drake Family of Shardeloes ( op. cit., pl. 215), exhibited in 1778, displays a similarly finely wrought carpet. An alternative attribution to Henry Walton (c.1746-1813) has been put forward by Evelyn Bell.
