    Mar. 22, 2026

Two Chinese famille rose porcelain plaques, one by Wang Dafan (1888-1961), one unsigned

    Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Two Chinese famille rose porcelain plaques one by Wang Dafan (1888-1961), one unsigned Both depicting court ladies, one plaque with inscription, signature and two seals. (2). Artist Biography Wang Dafan (1888–1961), given name Kun and sobriquet Xiping Jushi, was a leading figure among the celebrated Zhushan Bayou (Eight Friends of Zhushan) in Jingdezhen during the Republican period. Renowned for his depictions of elegant ladies in famille-rose enamels, Wang studied initially under Wang Xiaotang before synthesizing a wide range of influences. He successfully integrated the brush idiom and poetic sensibility of traditional literati painting with porcelain decoration, establishing a refined personal style characterized by meticulous execution and lyrical atmosphere. His portrayals of ladies were already highly sought after by collectors during his lifetime and are widely regarded as the finest examples of Republican-period porcelain figure painting. Inscription and Seals Inscribed: “With bamboo in the heart, the brush gives birth to flowers even in dreams. Painted in the autumn month of the xin-si year (1941) by Wang Dafan of Yishan.” Seals: Dafan (red); Wang Dafan (white). Description The present pair of elongated porcelain panels represents a classic and highly accomplished example of Wang Dafan’s celebrated figure compositions, preserved together as a matched pair—an increasingly rare survival. One panel depicts an elegant gathering of ladies in a garden courtyard. Beneath the shade of pine trees, a woman sits quietly at a table within a moon-gate window, her expression gentle and introspective, while two other ladies stand in the courtyard, their flowing robes animated with graceful movement. The palette is soft and harmonious, with fluid figure outlines and carefully balanced rocks and foliage, evoking a refined sense of seclusion and feminine elegance associated with the inner chambers. The companion panel portrays ladies in a pavilion setting. Ancient cypress trees rise with sculptural vigor beside an elegant pavilion, where three ladies are shown holding a fan or playing the qin, their gestures composed and serene. The subtle shading of the garments and natural color transitions create a gentle rhythm, forming a visual dialogue with the first panel—one interior and tranquil, the other open and animated—yet unified in mood and composition. The porcelain body and glaze are of exceptional quality. The panels are finely potted with a dense, refined body and coated with a lustrous, thick white glaze typical of superior Republican-period Jingdezhen porcelain. Painted over a boli bai (“glass-white”) ground, the famille-rose enamels are delicately shaded, particularly in the faces and drapery, where tonal gradations are handled with remarkable finesse. The result preserves the richness of Qing dynasty famille-rose while introducing the fresh elegance characteristic of Republican porcelain painting. Works by Wang Dafan depicting elegant ladies are inherently scarce, and pairs preserved intact are particularly rare. This pair not only exemplifies the artist’s mature style but also ranks among the most desirable examples of Republican-period famille-rose porcelain panels. Equally suitable for refined interior display in a grand residence or private salon, and for inclusion in a serious collection of modern Chinese ceramics, the present panels combine historical significance, artistic excellence, and strong market appeal.
