Wang Xuetao – Flowers and insects fan leaves album, ink and colour on paper, album

    Est: -

Wang Xuetao (1903–1982) Wang Xuetao, courtesy name Chiyuan, was a native of Cheng'an, Hebei Province, and a preeminent master of small freehand (xiaoxieyi) bird-and-flower painting in modern China. He pursued his early artistic education at the Beijing School of Fine Arts, studying under masters Wang Mengbai and Chen Shizeng, and later received direct, personal guidance from the iconic Qi Baishi. Synthesizing the brushwork sensibilities of these distinguished predecessors, he developed a highly distinctive personal artistic idiom. Specializing in flowers, birds, grasses and insects, Wang Xuetao placed great emphasis on life sketching from nature, with a remarkable ability to capture the fleeting, vivid spirit of natural subjects in a single moment. His brushwork is nimble, fluid and unrestrained, paired with bright, elegant and refined color palettes. His works brim with fresh, lively charm, resonating widely with both scholarly connoisseurs and general audiences. A pivotal figure who upheld classical traditions while pioneering new directions in modern Chinese bird-and-flower painting, he set an enduring artistic benchmark for subsequent generations, with his stylistic legacy continuing to exert influence in the field to this day.

  • WANG XUETAO MANDARIN DUCKS PAINTING
    Aug. 21, 2026

    WANG XUETAO MANDARIN DUCKS PAINTING

    Est: $6,000 - $8,000

Artist: Wang Xuetao (1903-1982) LOTUS AND MANDARIN DUCKS Wang Xuetao was among the most celebrated modern masters of Chinese flower-and-bird painting. A disciple of Qi Baishi, he developed a highly personal style distinguished by spontaneous brushwork, lyrical compositions, and a keen observation of the natural world. This elegant hanging scroll depicts a pair of mandarin ducks resting beneath lotus leaves and blossoms. Executed with fluid brushstrokes and restrained color, the broad ink washes of the lotus leaves contrast beautifully with the delicately rendered flowers and vividly colored birds. The composition conveys a quiet atmosphere of harmony and companionship. Mandarin ducks have long symbolized marital happiness and fidelity in Chinese culture, while lotus flowers represent purity and nobility. Their combination creates an auspicious subject expressing conjugal harmony, virtue, and enduring affection. The painting exemplifies Wang Xuetao’s mature style, in which expressive ink techniques are balanced by refined coloration and a sensitive appreciation of nature. Through a few economical strokes, the artist captures both the vitality of the birds and the tranquil beauty of the lotus pond, demonstrating the freshness and poetic spirit that distinguish his work. Ink and color on paper, Ersebiao mount, Double Jingyan on top, Vertical Axis Hanging Scroll Painting (Sight): 68cm H x 33cm W Signed/Seal(s): Signed, with three seals PROVENANCE: Acquired from a prominent collector, representing an important private collections.
