Royal Navy.- [Ward (Edward)] The Wooden World Dissected; in the Character of a Ship of War, eighth edition, browned, cropped with occasional slight loss (mostly catchwords), with contemporary ink inscriptions (one relating to the American Revolutionary War) on front free endpapers, contemporary sheep, worn and repaired, rebacked, new endpapers, [ESTC T201255], 12mo, for H.Woodgate, and S.Brooks, 1761. ⁂ Controversial account of the Royal Navy, first published in 1707, by the satirical writer Ned Ward who is most renowned for The London Spy of 1698. All editions are scarce; some contain an engraved frontispiece but seemingly not called for here. ESTC and Library Hub cite one copy only of this edition (King's College Library, University of London). The main inscription reads: " Darious Sandford his hand wrote at Fort Dolphin after being taken prisoner by the schooner Punch John Parksinson put on board a Spanish ?corvette of Part de Plat ? to Fort Dolphin".

[Ward (Edward)] Hudibras Redivivus; or, A Burlesque Poem on the Times, parts 1-12 in 1 vol., first editions, part 1 ?lacking preliminary leaf, part 1 with title laid down, A2 with small repair to verso not affecting text & final f. with ink inscriptions (one dated 1762) and small smudge, foxing and browning to varying degrees but heavy at points, contemporary calf, early reback, spine gilt and with red morocco label, some wear to corners, little rubbed, joints split but covers holding firm, [ESTC T64245 (for part 1, each part separately numbered); Foxon W90], B. Bragge, 1705-07; and others, 18th century poetry, v.s. (13) ⁂ First editions of the first 12 parts of Ward's extended political verse satire, issued in a serial format, imitating, or as Edward Ward asserted, continuing, Samuel Butler's Hudibras of 1663. A second volume, constituting another 12 parts issued at monthly intervals, was published in 1707. ESTC calls for three preliminary leaves to the first part, although Foxon calls for only two. This copy contains two, the title and preface f.

London.- [Ward (Edward)] A Compleat and Humorous Account of all the Remarkable Clubs and Societies in the Cities of London and Westminster, engraved frontispiece, title printed in red, contemporary ink signature to title, lightly soiled and stained, modern half calf, spine faded, for the author, 1745 § Mumford (Erasmus) A Letter to the Club at White's, first edition, modern marbled boards, [ Kress 5059; Not in Goldsmiths'], for W.Owen, 1750; and 2 others on London clubs and societies, 8vo et infra (4) ⁂ The first is a satire on London social life through descriptions of actual and fictitious clubs, including the No-Nose Club, the Farting Club, the Club of Ugly-Faces and of Broken Shopkeepers. It was first published in 1709 as The Secret History of Clubs: particularly the Kit-Cat, Beef-Stake, Vertuosos, Quacks, Knights of the Golden-Fleece, Florists, Beaus, &c. The second item is a self-indulgent satire ostensibly on gambling but in fact largely political with references to Swift and Fielding.
