The National Portrait Gallery in London owns a copy of this 1873 chromolithograph and holds it in its permanent collection (inv. no. NPG D43595). For further information, please check their website: https://www.npg.org.uk/collections/search/portrait/mw256077/Nasser-al-Din-Shah-of-Persia-Sovereigns-No-11 On the reverse of the chromolithograph, a lengthy text introduces in detail the readers to the personality, character and qualities of the Qajar ruler, Nasir al-Din Shah. The most interesting section is perhaps the final paragraph, in which his habits and personal lifestyle are described, reading: "Nasser-ed-Din is a handsome man with dark regular features [...], unlike most Orientals he speaks with much vivacity. His habits at home are extremely frugal. [...] until he came to Europe he drank nothing but sugared water, lemonade, or sour milk mixed with a little salt."

SPY portrait of Sir William Crookes (1832-1919)

            Est: $50 - $75

[SCIENCE] offered here is a color print of Sir William Crookes (1832-1919), image approx. 4 x 6-3/4 in. plus margins. This is a SPY portrait printed at a later time. Contained in its original mat, ready for framing. Would look great with his autograph if you have one. Sir William Crookes OM PRS (1832-1919) was a British chemist and physicist. He was a pioneer of vacuum tubes, inventing the Crookes tube which was made in 1875. This was a foundational discovery that eventually changed the whole of chemistry and physics. He is credited with discovering the element thallium, announced in 1861, with the help of spectroscopy. He was also the first to describe the spectrum of terrestrial helium, in 1865. Crookes was the inventor of the Crookes radiometer, but did not discern the true explanation of the phenomenon he detected. Crookes also invented a 100% ultraviolet blocking sunglass lens. For a time, he was interested in spiritualism and became president of the Society for Psychical Research. Very fine condition.
