Melvin Warren (1920-1995) "When Cowboys Get Edgy" Limited Edition Print. Signed and numbered 85/750 by the artist in the lower margins. Comes in original portfolio. From the artist: "One summer on the way to Montana for the Cowboy Artists' Trailride, I came upon a group of cowboys driving a herd of Herefords to pens on the outskirts of a small village. While I stopped and waited for them I got the idea for this painting. I started moving cattle when I was a boy, helping my Daddy. I know how many things can spook a herd and how long it takes to get them back together. Watching those cowboys move that herd brought it all back to me. I felt that I knew what each man was thinking as they got closer to the pens. That's what I've tried to get into this painting." Like many of his contemporaries, Mel Warren followed an arduous path to achieve artistic success. The subject matter came easily to him. His father had been a ranch hand and cowboy, and Warren grew up on a succession of ranches in Texas and New Mexico. He became a keen observer of ranch life and Native American culture.
