    Attributed to Alexander Warshawsky (American 1887-1945) View of the Village of Locronan, Brittany, France, c.1934. Oil on canvas, unsigned, framed. Provenance: By descent in the family of the present owner. Acquired by the present owner's grandfather from the artist in 1935, in Shaker Heights, Ohio. The painting resided in the family home on Winthrop Road in Shaker Heights, Ohio for over 50 years. By further descent subsequently resided in a later family home in Pepper Pike, Ohio until 2010, and has been with the current owner in storage until the present time. Dimensions: 29 x 40 in. canvas, size, 37 x 47 in. as framed. Condition: Very good original condition, there is a .5 (1/2 ) inch tear in one of the spires in the upper center. Note: David Dietz (Cleveland, Ohio, 1897-1984) was a civic minded Pulitzer Prize winning science journalist and author who covered science and medicine for The Cleveland Press and Scripps-Howard newspapers for over 50 years. He published a daily science column and received the Pulitzer Prize for reporting in 1937. During World War II he served as consultant to the surgeon general of the Army and published 9 books. He was respected for translating difficult scientific concepts into understandable language. Was also a science correspondent for NBC radio in the 1940's and a winner of numerous awards and honorary degrees. He was active and passionate about Cleveland's art culture, and was partly responsible for the commission of Max Kalish's larger than life bronze sculpture of Abraham Lincoln located in downtown Cleveland. Kalish also made a plaster portrait bust of Dietz. According to family lore, Dietz knew both Abel and Alexander Warshawsky and was a frequent golf partner of one or both brothers.
