  • Antoine Watteau, Nicolas Tardieu - The Embarkation for Cythera
    Dec. 12, 2024

Antoine Watteau, Nicolas Tardieu - The Embarkation for Cythera

    Est: €380 - €580

L'Embarquement pour Cythere (The Embarkation for Cythera). “Cette superbe estampe est la maîtresse pièce de l’oeuvre de Tardieu; c’est aussi une des plus importantes de l’oeuvre de Watteau”. It is with these words of praise that Portalis and Béraldi begin their list of the prints made by the engraver. We see noble men and women on a shore at the edge of a wood, with most couples going aboard a ship surrounded by clouds and flying cupids, while a few others are still conversing on the shore. Etching with some engraving done circa 1733 with some engraving by Nicolas Tardieu (1674-1749) showing the painting 'Pilgrimage to Cythera', dated 1718,by Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) now in Charlottenburg Palace, Berlin. Signed A. Watteau pinxit, Tardieu Sculp. With the publishers address of 'la Ve de F.Chereau.( Widow of the printseller and publisher François Chéreau I, continued to run his business from same address after his death in 1729, She died in 1755. Strangely enough there seem to be smaller and larger versions by Tardieu of this scene. A more common version measures 54,30 x 74,30 cm. Our version 44,20 x 59,50 cm. Rare.

BIOGRAPHY: Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721). Jean-Antoine Watteau was the most representative painter of the French Rococo style, an artist beside whom the painterly talents of his contemporaries (like the Venetian Giambattista Tiepolo, and the Frenchmen Francois Boucher and Jean-Honore Fragonard) are measured. He was born at Valenciennes - the town had only recently been ceded to France, and during his lifetime he was considered a Flemish artist - and his early years are obscure. He trained under local artists, and arrived in Paris in 1702 as an assistant to one of them, a painter of scenery for the Paris Opera. This was probably Watteau's first contact with the theatre. He later became infatuated with it.

ATTR ANTOINE WATTEAU FRENCH SKETCH PENCIL PAINTING

    Est: $100 - $150

Attributed to Antoine Watteau, French, 1684 to 1721, pencil painting on paper, a sketch depicting a gallant scene with a courting couple. Signed lower left. Mounted on cardboard. Jean-Antoine Watteau was a French painter and draughtsman whose brief career spurred the revival of interest in colour and movement, as seen in the tradition of Correggio and Rubens. He revitalized the waning Baroque style, shifting it to the less severe, more naturalistic, less formally classical, Rococo. One of a kind artwork. Kopie nach Watteau, Wahrsagerin / Copy after Watteau, Fortune teller

    Est: -

Watteau, Jean Antoine (1684 Valenciennes - 1721 Nogent-sur-Marne) Kopie nach ''Die Wahrsagerin''. Öl auf Holz, spätes 19. Jh. Unten links monogrammiert ''L.M.'' (?). Rückseitig vier Großbuchstaben schwach lesbar. Im Schmuckrahmen. 35 x 27 cm, 50 x 44 cm (Ra). Vereinzelt sehr kleine Retuschen. Copy after Watteau: The Fortune teller. Oil on wood, late 19th century. Monogrammed bottom left ''L.M.'' (?). Four letters on backside. In ornamental frame. Some very small retouches.
