Jean -Antoine Watteau - after, 'Fêtes Vénitiennes', circa 1900

              Est: €1,120 - €1,400

Oil on canvas Presumably France, circa 1900 After Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684 -1721) - French Rococo painter Copy after Watteau's original composition in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh (1718 /19) Gilded stucco frame Overall dimensions, with frame: 51 x 45 cm Good condition Provenance: German private collection Watteau was a master of gallant scenes, which were widely spread through his prints The present work derives from the painting 'Fêtes Vénitiennes' (1718/19) of the French Rococo painter Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684 -1721), now in the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh. The artist has painted the present version after a print of 1732. The seated musician is traditionally identified with a self-portrait of Watteau, while the dancer in the center is considered the mistress of the Duke of Orleans. Her dancing partner is Nicolas Vleughels, a Flemish painter and friend of Watteau. The painting is in good condition showing some wear marks. There a few parts with barely visible dents caused by the pressure of the stretcher. The gilt stucco frame is overall in good condition, showing some cracks and losses at the lower right. The overall dimensions, with frame, are 51 x 45 cm, and the stretcher measures 42 x 36 cm. Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) Jean-Antoine Watteau began his artistic education at the age of 10 with Jacques-Albert Gérin in Valenciennes. In 1702, the young artist moved to Paris, where he started working as a stage painter with Claude Gillot, and later as a decoration painter with Claude Audran, the custodian of the Galerie du Luxembourg. He was accepted at the Academy in 1708, and he became a member in 1717, after applying for it with his painting 'The Embarkation for Cythera' (now in the Louvre). Watteau is often considered the most important painter of the French Rococo and is known as the inventor of the 'Fêtes Galantes'. His works are on display in major museum collections, for example in the Louvre or Eremitage. Greater collections of his works can be found in Sanssouci castle in Potsdam, and in the Wallace Collection in London. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance. Antoine Watteau attributed, 'Fête Champêtre', 18th Century

              Est: €24,000 - €30,000

Oil on canvas, relined France, 18th Century Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) attributed - French Rococo Painter Frame bearing a metal plaque with the name and life dates of Watteau Verso various old labels including one inscribed: 'Provenienz Sammlung Baron de Reuter. Privatsammlung Schweiz' A typical 'fête galante' Amazing, partly reticulated hand carved wooden frame of the 19th century Overall dimensions, framed: 88 x 101 cm; stretcher frame 65.5 x 77 cm Good condition Provenance: German Private Property Antoine Watteau's gallant scenes are probably known by everyone - even though they are not often to be seen in the original. Even scarcer is an opportunity to find one of these on the market. Paintings attributed to Watteau fetch up to 577,000 euros at international auctions This painting that is attributed to Jean-Antoine Watteau shows a gallant scene as they are typical for the artist. Sitting in a delicate, idealized landscape in front of a fountain with stony putti is a young lady who is being taught how to play the flute by a dashing admirer. Two children are playing at their left, and thy strike quite a similar posture as the couple they appear like a miniature copy of the scene. A bit further aback are some more persons entertaining themselves with playing ball or exchanging endearments. Some of the elements that are typical for Watteau are for example the fountain to the left that appears in other forms in nearly every single one of Watteau's paintings; the flute teaching beau in his red velvet dress is also seen paying his respects in some other paintings. Also typical are the great aliveness of the nature that the artist has awakened in his paintings despite its deliberate artificiality and the opening of the wide landscape in the back. The slightly volatile brush strokes can as well be seen in some of Watteau's paintings. The painting is in an optically good condition considering ist age. It has been relined and enhanced and covered around the edges with framing paper. The colour layer is covered by a varnish. The colour has been applied rather thinly which is why the structure of the canvas is partly clearly visible. Craquelure can also be seen. Small colour touch-ups are visible here and there for example in the upper right or in the dresses of the lady in the front and the girl. The beautifully hand carved wooden frame shows traces of age and use such as material losses. The framed overall dimensions measure 88 x 101 cm, the dimensions of the stretcher frame are 65.5 x 77 cm. The stretcher frame shows some old inventory numbers on the back as well as the handwritten inscription 'Sammlung Baron de Reuter' (Collection Baron de Reuter). There is also a label reading 'Provenienz Sammlung Baron de Reuter. Privatsammlung Schweiz' (Provenance Collection Baron de Reuter. Private Collection Switzerland) and another one with the inscription 'Madame N...'. Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) Jean-Antoine Watteau began his artistic education with only ten years old under Jacques-Albert Gérin in Valenciennes. In 1702, the young artist moved to Paris where he began working as a stage painter under Claude Gillot and later as a decoration painter under Claude Audran, the custodian of the Galerie du Luxembourg. He was accepted into the academy in 1708 and he was made a member in 1717 after applying for it with his painting 'The Embarkation for Cythera' (Louvre Version). Watteau is often considered the most important painter of the French Rococo and is known as the inventor of the 'Fêtes Galantes'. His works are today in the Louvre or the Eremitag and greater collections can be found in castle Sanssouci in Potsdam and in the Wallace Collection in London.

              Est: $200 - $400

O/C/P, Couple Reclining, after J. A. Watteau? Medium: Oil Support: Canvas mounted on panel. Artist: After Jean Antoine Watteau Artist Dates: 1684 - 1721 Country of Origin: France Title & Description: 'Courtship Scene' The Age of Feasts of Courtship. On the document testifying to Watteau's acceptance into the Academy, the title "embarquement pour Cythere" is crossed out and replaced by "La fete galante". Over the preceding years, fete galante (feast of courtship) had become a genre in its own right like history painting and still life. It was a genre which Watteau himself had invented and with which he had made his name. He had already produced over 50 feast of courtship paintings, most of them employing a small format, unlike the Paris and Berlin Cythera canvases. They all depict handsome young men and women who are chatting, dancing, flirting and making music. They are mostly dressed in a rustic style or in the costumes of the Italian Commedia dell'arte. In the present painting they are carrying long pilgrim's staffs, for they are making a pilgrimage to a sanctuary of love. Signature: AW conjoined Date of Work: 19th century? Frame: Later gesso frame Work Size: 3.75" H x 5 " W Frame Size: 11.5" H x 13" W x 2.25 " D Weight: 2 lbs Provenance: From the estate of Arthur J. Connoly Condition: Light craquelure, no inpainting when placed under black light. Artist Biography: Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721). Jean-Antoine Watteau was the most representative painter of the French Rococo* style, an artist beside whom the painterly talents of his contemporaries (like the Venetian Giambattista Tiepolo, and the Frenchmen Francois Boucher and Jean-Honore Fragonard) are measured. He was born at Valenciennes - the town had only recently been ceded to France, and during his lifetime he was considered a Flemish artist - and his early years are obscure. He trained under local artists, and arrived in Paris in 1702 as an assistant to one of them, a painter of scenery for the Paris Opera. This was probably Watteau's first contact with the theatre. He later became infatuated with it. Left in Paris by his master, Watteau was forced to produce copies of popular Old Masters* on a semi-production-line basis. It may have been at this time that he began to paint in his own right, scenes he would have known during his childhood at Valenciennes, executed in the style of the Dutch Realists Adriaen Brouwer (1605-38) and David Teniers (1610-90). Throughout his life his paintings were always based on drawings, and even during these early years in Paris when he was living in poverty, he made many delicate drawings after nature. Quite soon after his arrival in Paris he had the good fortune to come into contact with Claude Gillot (1673-1722), the theatrical painter, daughtsman* and etcher*, and by 1703, he may have been his pupil. Under Gillot he renewed his association with the theatre and in particular with the Commedia dell'Arte. This troupe of Italian comedians had taken Paris by storm with their fast and irreverent pantomimes; their performances had been considered so scandalous that the company had been expelled from the city in 1697. The memory of the Commedia dell'Arte lived on in the productions of French comedians who also based their plays round the traditional characters of Harlequin, Pierrot, and Pantalone. Scenes from the Commedia formed most of the subject matter of Gillot's paintings, handled in a rather matter-of-fact way. Not surprisingly, the paintings that Watteau made during his apprenticeship with Gillot are Commedia scenes that seem, like his master's, to have been painted from actual performances. Additionally, this composition reverses Watteau's original, suggesting perhaps that it was made after a print. Interestingly this painting may, in fact, provide important clues to the original appearance of many of the details in the painting in Troyes, which has undergone extensive restoration over the years.
