    May. 27, 2026

FREDERICK JUDD WAUGH OIL, WOMAN PLAYING LYRE.

    Est: $800 - $1,200

A Frederick Judd Waugh (1861-1940) oil on canvas, woman in white robes playing a lyre among tulips, signed lower right F.J. Waugh 1896. Canvas, 35” x 24”, Framed behind glass 40” x 29.5”. Auctioneer’s Note: Frederick Judd Waugh found notoriety as a maritime painter later in his career. At the time “Woman Playing Lyre” was painted, he was still experimenting with other themes. After marrying in 1892, Waugh travelled extensively throughout Europe for the following fifteen years, and had settled in Paris at the time this piece was painted, 1896. He had taken up studies at Académie Julian in Paris, taught by Adolphe-William Bouguereau. One can see Bouguereau’s influence in the present work: the idealized female form, the Classical motifs, and the pastel palette. The popular Art Nouveau movement, at it’s hight while Waugh was in Paris, also enacts influence in this work: the delicate golden hour light, the motif of a woman in nature, the florals, and the highly stylized swirling robes. Although Waugh would spend most of his artistic life focusing on other subjects, this work offers an insight into an artist experimenting with popular styles, and finding his creative voice.
