In addition to studying with his father in Frankfort, Carl Weber also studied in Munich, Vienna and Paris before returning to Philadelphia sometime in the 1870s, probably around 1874. Following his return, he lived and worked in Philadelphia until his death on January 25, 1921. Est: £250 - £350

Carl Weber,  American 1855-1935-  The meadow, Montgomery, Pennsylvania;  pencil and watercolour heightened with white on paper, signed 'Carl Weber' (lower right), 33.7 x 65.2 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Weber was the American-born son of the German artist Gottlieb Daniel Paul Weber (1823-1916). Much of his artistic training was undertaken in Europe, including his studies under Karl Raupp (1837-1918) at the Munich Royal Academy of Fine Art, and lessons with Jakob Becker (1810-1872) and Johan Eduard von Steinle (1810-1886). Weber returned to Philadelphia in the 1870s, where he was particularly celebrated for his idyllic, pastoral views of the Pennsylvanian countryside, of which the present work is an especially charming example.

Carl Philipp Webber (Pennsylvania, Germany, 1849 - 1922) Carl Philipp Weber (sometimes with one terminal p on the middle name and occasionally (mistakenly) with Charles as a first name) was born in Darmstadt, Germany in 1849, probably late in the year. As an infant in 1853 he accompanied his parents to the United States, where they settled in Philadelphia. His father, a musician and music teacher, was also named Carl; he was the older brother of Paul Weber, a well-known artist who had earlier settled in Philadelphia and lived there with his family, which included a son, Carl, born Oct. 18, 1850. Having the same name, being of nearly the same age, and both being landscape artists who lived and worked in Philadelphia for much of their lives, the Weber cousins have bedeviled auction catalog makers and art gallery biography writers, who have been unable to keep the two separate. Hence many paintings done by Carl Philipp are credited to his cousin Carl, and vice-versa. Occasionally brief biographical notes put one or the other in the wrong Weber family. The confusion would be less if signatures on the paintings done by each were examined, since they are quite distinct. Both worked with oil paints and watercolors, but the impression given by a review of auction listing illustrations is that many more of Carl Weber’s watercolors come to market than those of Carl Philipp Weber, based on an assessment of the paintings and the attached signatures rather than the attributions in the listings. The family of Carl Philipp Weber seems to have stayed put once they reached Philadelphia (although Carl Philipp spent time studying painting in Europe), but sometime before 1870, probably in 1861, Paul Weber moved back to Germany, where his son Carl studied with various artists in addition to his father, before returning alone in the 1870s to Philadelphia to live and work until his death on January 25, 1921 (catalog listings, etcetera often give the year as 1922, which was the year that his cousin, Carl Philipp, died, on Dec. 12, outliving his cousin Carl by about 2 years). There are many auction and gallery listings for Charles Philipp Weber, with the same birth and death years as are commonly given (though not accurately) for Carl Philipp Weber. The paintings referenced show that Charles P. and Carl P. is the same person. All of the many listings on the internet indicate that the works shown as for Charles were signed C. Philipp Weber or C. Ph. Weber. None were signed with Charles. How this phantom was created is a mystery. However, there is in the 1860 U.S. Census records, as one of the children of Paul Weber, the father of Carl, a child of the right age but shown as Charles (name errors for children are common in census records). Given the confusion in keeping these two cousins straight, perhaps someone decided that Charles was the name of one of the two cousins. To add to that confusion, Paul Weber was not the father of Carl Philipp Weber. Paul’s brother Carl, the musician/music teacher, was the father of Carl Philipp Weber. It is safe to say that Charles Philipp Weber is nothing more than an unfortunate but well-embedded error. In summary, Carl Philipp Weber was the son of Carl Weber, a musician and music teacher. He was born in 1849 (in Darmstadt, Germany) and died on December 12, 1922. Carl Weber was the son of Paul Weber, an artist. He was born on Oct. 18, 1850 (in Philadelphia, PA) and died on January 25, 1921. An artist named Charles Philipp Weber never existed.
