Circle of Thomas Webster, RA, British 1800-1886- Portrait of a lady, seated full-length in an interior, leaning against a table and gazing into a hand mirror; oil on canvas, 62 x 48.2 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work recalls the approach of Webster, a central member of the Cranbrook Colony of artists, who influenced younger artists including George Bernard O'Neill (1828-1917) and Frederick Daniel Hardy (1827-1911). Webster was best known for his humorous and characterful genre scenes, often set in village squares or rustic cottage interiors, and executed with a distinctively earthy palette, such as, for example, his 'Early Lesson' in the collection of the Royal Academy, or his portrait of 'Biddy' which was offered at Sotheby's, New York, on 19 October 2015, lot 65.

His most famous and popular work, The Village Choir, is in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Charles Dickens thought Webster such a good painter of children that he commissioned him to paint Squeers School-Dotheboys Hall, an illustration to his novel Nicholas Nickelby.
