Weegee captured intimate moments of couples in 1940s–1950s New York, contrasting his usual gritty crime scenes with romantic, often voyeuristic, images. His "Lovers at the Movies" series, taken with infrared film, shows passionate embraces in the dark during film screenings at crowded theatres. Compared to these candid shots of mostly passionately kissing couples this picture stands out in showing the beautiful partners in a less spectacular, tender touch. Long overdue, WestLicht presented the first Weegee retrospective in Vienna in 2011, featuring some 250 vintage prints by the legendary photographer. Violence, traffic accidents, and catastrophic fires were Weegee's specialty. Close-up photographs were his trademark: nocturnal figures on the streets of New York, bleached by flashlight. Born in Austria, Usher Fellig (anglicized to Arthur at Ellis Island) arrived in New York in 1910 as part of the wave of immigrants flooding into New York's lower East Side. He left school at the age of 14 to help support his family, As an immigrant himself, as recorder of the New York scene, the lower classes had his sympathy, the criminal classes his unflinching scrutiny and the upperclasses were reflected in a caustic manner. Weegee's uncanny, unerring instinct often placed him first at the locations where newsworthy events occurred, often the first at the scene of a crime before the police. He was subsequently dubbed "Weegee"—a phonetic rendering of Ouija—because his instant and seemingly prescient arrivals at scenes of crimes or other emergencies seemed as magical as a Ouija board. Arthur Fellig, or "Weegee" as he was popularly known, was a photojournalist renowned for his stark black and white photography which commonly focused on street scenes in New York City. He was known for following emergency services answering calls on the Lower East Side and then photographing their activity, often resulting in unflinchingly realistic photographs of urban life and crime scenes. When asked how he got started he simply said, "In my particular case I didn't wait 'til somebody gave me a job or something, I went and created a job for myself—freelance photographer. And what I did, anybody else can do... I went down to Manhattan Police Headquarters and for two years I worked without a police card or any kind of credentials.
