FRANZ EDMUND WEIROTTER (Austrian, 1733-1771) "View of the Villa D'Este" - Etching on antique paper. Signed in plate only lower centre. Unframed. 2.2 x 6.2 inches (5.3 x 15.5 cm). Very good condition, typical wear, with .2-cm tear at the left edge, lightly tipped to backing. Includes a copy of 1986 receipt from Craddock and Barnard (London UK). From the Gary Robertson Historical Print Collection (Regina). This image is also in the permanent collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art.

Stay at the Vienna Academy of Arts from 1751 to 1755; stay in Paris 1759-1763, there acquaintance with Johann Georg Wille and his circle of artists. Spends one year in Rome on a scholarship from the Royal French Academy. Wille's letter of recommendation to Johann Joachim Winckelmann and Anton Raphael Mengs grants him entry into the leading German artistic circles. Travels to Rome, Tivoli, Livorno, Viterbo and Florence; professor at the Vienna Academy of Engraving. After Jan Kobel from the artist family Kobel in Palatinate-Bavaria and the Netherlands. Their progenitor was Johann Heinrich Kobell. His younger son of the same name moved from Mannheim to Rotterdam and founded the Dutch branch of the family.Verso inscribed in lead on the original passepartout with the artist's life data.The print comes from a famous antiquarian bookshop in Munich.
