Kouwenhoven Jr., Savannah, GA Description: John Wesley (NY/CA, b. 1928) , Floating Pig, Acrylic on Canvas, 1967, signed, titled and dated 1967 on back of canvas, with label in upper right corner for the Whitney Museum of American Art, in a silvered shadowbox Julius Lowy frame. Frame size: 41 3/4 in. x 57 1/2 in. Provenance: Floating Pig was exhibited in the "1967 Annual Exhibition of Contemporary American Painting at the Whitney Museum of America Art and is listed in the catalogue (#150 on page 13) of the exhibition. It was purchased from the artist via Arden K. Anderson, New York in November of 1969. Together with a bill of sale from Arden Anderson dated Nov. 7, 1969, a photocopy of the catalogue from the 1967 Whitney Annual Exhibition. Wesley became prominent in the early sixties creating images of traditional emblems, historical figures, comic book personalities, animals, sexy women, athletes and showgirls into surreal daydreams. Wesley is known for his pastel palette, his use of painted 'frames' within his pictures, is early emblem paintings, his cartoon Bumstead paintings, and 'ultimately for his representations of an inner erotic voyage where we are both the voyager and the voyerur.'
