                Mar. 14, 2024

BENJAMIN WEST Figure Studies (Studies for Saint Michael and the Dragon).

                Est: $2,000 - $3,000

BENJAMIN WEST Figure Studies (Studies for Saint Michael and the Dragon). Black chalk on laid paper, circa 1797. 228x255 mm; 9x10 inches. Provenance: Estate of the artist; by descent; Claire Francis, descendent of Benjamin West; likely sold Christie's, London, March 14, 1967, (Francis sale); Christopher Powney, Kent; E. Maurice Bloch; private collection, Los Angeles; thence by descent to current owners, private collection, Los Angeles. In 1797 West (1738–1820) was commissioned by the flamboyant collector William Beckford (1760-1844) to design stained glass windows for his neo-Gothic house in Wiltshire, England (Beckford was an exceptional collector, many of his Italian Renaissance masterpieces went to the National Gallery in London). West painted Saint Michael and the Dragon, for which the current drawing is a study, perhaps referencing Beckford's personal identification with the subject. On Beckford's 21st birthday and the feast day of Saint Michael, September 29, 1787, Beckford wrote in his diary, "I assisted with apparent devotion, but could not help feeling all the while more sympathy for the old Dragon than becomes a pious Catholic. Alas, we are both fallen angels!" referring to his own pariah status after his two romantic relationships with men were discovered. Both Saint Michael and the Dragon and West's other design for Wiltshire, St. Thomas à Becket are in the collection of the Toledo Museum of Art, Ohio. Born in Springfield, Pennsylvania, in a house that now sits on the campus of Swarthmore College, West was among the most prominent, pre-Revolutionary, 18th-century American artists. With financial assistance from wealthy Philadelphia businessmen, he traveled to Italy in 1760 to pursue his artistic training and study the old masters, eventually arriving in England in 1763, where he established himself as a painter of historical scenes and portraits. Over the next few decades, West ascended to the upper echelons of the English art hierarchy. He was appointed an official court painter by King George III in 1772 and became the second president of the nascent Royal Academy in London, following the inaugural presidency of Joshua Reynolds, in 1792. West's most famous painting The Death of General Wolfe, 1771, is now in the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa.

Betrothal Scene, circa 1799, black chalk, on laid paper with an O Taylor watermark, 185 x 281 mm (7 1/4 x 11 ins) QTY: (1) NOTE: Provenance: with Simon Dickinson by 1995, where acquired by Carlos Alberto Cruz; offered at Sotheby's, London, 23 September 2021, Old Master and British Works on Paper, including works from the Collections of Carlos Alberto Cruz and the Late Timothy Clowes, lot 38. The spontaneous quality of this study, with densely worked-in shadows formed with near horizontal hatchings, is akin to a number of black chalk drawings in the Morgan Library and Museum, for example the more rudimentary sketch of Joseph making himself known to his brothers, black chalk on paper (9.3 x 8.3 cm), accession no. 1970.11:207; and The Temptation of Christ, black chalk on grey paper, (41.6 x 29.4 cm), accession no. 1970.11:180. The frieze like composition of the present drawing, with its harmoniously balanced groups of draped figures, is comparable to West’s more highly finished drawing with wash and pen and ink of Rebecca at the Well, (33.9 x 52.3 cm), also at the Morgan, accession no. 1970.11:1.

A Lady said to be Juliana Fermor Penn, unsigned, oil on canvas, 30-1/8 x 25 in.; 18th century gilt wood frame, 36-3/8 x 32 in. Note: A label verso indicates this work was exhibited as Juliana Penn by Frances Cotes possibly during the time Sir Charles Holmes was Director of either the National Portrait Gallery or the National Gallery, London. Neither the painting nor the sitter is represented in Edward Mead Johnson, Francis Cotes. A portrait in pastel by artist Katherine Read of Juliana Penn and noted as having descended in the Penn family, was sold by Philip Mould. This pastel presents an intriguing pose and semblance to this portrait. Another portrait of Penn was executed by Katherine Read and was engraved by Robert Pranker circa 1750-1775, which possibly supports confirmation of the sitter, as does the portrait of Juliana Penn by Devis that is now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art (see: https://www.philamuseum.org/collection/object/99954). In 1763, Juliana Penn made a donation of books and globes to the recently founded library in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It was renamed The Juliana Library Company in her honor. Literature: Helmut Von Erffa & Allen Staley, The Paintings of Benjamin West, 1986, No.682, pp.542-3. The provenance is listed as ?Artist's estate at his death and sold by his sons through George Robins, London, June 20-22, 1829, lot 173 (second sale).
