Oxford at the Clarendon Press: Bensley, Cooke and Collingwood, 1815. 4tos. Illustrated in steel throughout with engravings by Charles Heath after designs by Westall. 3 volumes. Text in double columns. Contemporary full purple straight grain morocco, boards elaborately gilt-stamped and decoratively ruled in blind, spines ruled, tooled, and lettered in gilt in compartments, four raised bands, gilt turn-ins, later red endleaves, all edges gilt. STEREOTYPED EDITION, WITH BEAUTIFUL GILT DECORATIONS WITH THE "TETRAGRAMMATION" STAMPED IN GILT ON BOARDS. The Tetragrammation is a holy Jewish symbol, the four-letter name of God in Hebrew.

Richard Westall RA (1765-1836) The young David and King Saul oil on canvas 72 x 52cm Condition Report: Overall: 81 x 61cm The painting is executed in oil on canvas which has been lined. The canvas tension is stiff and the picture is in plane. The paint layers are in a good, stable condition overall. Small areas of overpaint are well matched to the original. The varnish is clear, even and matte. The painting is comprised by a thick layer of surface dirt which has a smeary appearance following an attempt at cleaning, the dirt has partially affected the varnish layers below.
