            Est: $200 - $300

17" by 13 1/8" in matte. Emmi Whitehorse (Born 1956) is active/lives in New Mexico, Connecticut. Emmi Whitehorse is known for Mixed-media Native American abstract images. Born in Crownpoint, New Mexico on the Navajo Reservation, Emmi Whitehorse attended a government boarding school and showed an early fascination for drawing horses. As a professional artist, she is known for her serene, dream-like abstract images, often with symbolic meaning of her culture. Many of these images suggest plant forms or animals. Her mentors include her grandmother and her junior high art teacher, Kathleen Hueser, as well as Harmony Hammond at the University of New Mexico. From Hammond, she learned to free herself from from traditional methods and to work on large surfaces or grounds rather than smaller, more constraining ones. Allard Auction Collection Inv: NO TAG

Emmi Whitehorse (Navajo) is one of New Mexico's most beloved contemporary artists. She has devised her own private language of symbols and marks that draw inspiration from her Native American culture and the New Mexico land. Whitehorse's marks and gestures suggest ancient memory and they float like poetry in the atmosphere of her abstractions. Whitehorse has had an enormous influence on the history of art in New Mexico, and her work is critical to understanding the evolution of New Mexico's powerful community of contemporary artists and what inspires them. We welcome the opportunity to discuss the painting with you. In the words of New Mexico resident and internationally revered art critic Lucy Lippard, Whitehorse's works offer us "metaphysical views from the Navajo world. As such, they offer to viewers from 'both worlds' a glimpse of what art can be."

She uses her hands to smear, caress, and fine-tune the dry washes of her grounds. The actual drawing process is equally intuitive... Viewers can choose -as we adjust our eyesight, our depth of field, to Whitehorse's intricate cyphers- whether to read these signs of nature as either very near ('myopic,' she calls it) or very far away. Either way, the tangles of marks amount to a secret cache, a secret code" (Lippard, Lucy R., "All the Way Home," 2006, essay for Whitehorse exhibition, Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art).
