CHARLES WHYMPER, MEGALOSAURUS - ORIGINAL ARTWORK FOR HENRY R. KNIPE’S NEBULA TO MAN. ILLUSTRATED ON PAGE 65

    Est: $8,000 - $12,000

WHYMPER, Charles (1853-1941). Megalosaurus. Original Illustration in pen, ink and grey wash, heightened in white. c.1905-1912. 9 7/8” x 7” sheet. Original artwork for Henry R. Knipe’s Nebula to Man. Illustrated on page 65: “Megalosaurus / Total length about 25 feet / Remains found in England, France, South Africa, and India). The Megalosaurus, ‘big lizard’, was a carnivorous, large theropod dinosaur that lived in the United Kingdom during the Mid-Jurassic period (170-155 mya). One of the first dinosaur fossils described, a femur bone of a Megalosaurus was discovered in 1670 by the Oxford University professor, Robert Plot. However, Plot believed the bone belonged to a Roman war elephant or even from one of the giants referened in the bible. Nearly one hundred and fifty years later, William Buckland, renowned explorer and early paleontologist, studied the remains and classified it as belonging to the Megalosaurus (Buckland, 1824). The Megalogsaurus was the model for the world’s first ever full-scaled model of a dinosaur, as it featured in the Crystal Palace World Fair in 1854. In spite of it’s name, the Megalosaurus was only one quarter the size of its cousin of the later Mesozoic Era, the Tyrannosaurus Rex. ----- Charles H. Whymper (31 August 1853 - 25 April 1941), aka C. Whymper, was a British painter and illustrator. He was born in London. His father, Josiah Wood Whymper (1813-1903), was a well-known painter and engraver. Whymper was educated at the Royal Academy Schools. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolors, the New Gallery, and the Fine Art Society, London. In 1909, Whymper was elected to the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolors. Whymper was a prolific book illustrator specializing in travel, animal, and hunting themes. He also contributed to The Illustrated London News, Good Words, and The English Illustrated Magazine.
