Emperor Franz I., accompanied by officers, rides past the band. 2. "Cavallerie Manoeuvre auf der Schmelz den 21ten September 1822." Spectators in the foreground, an imperial coach with ladies drives up from the right. It is preceded by Francis I. on horseback, accompanied by 3 officers. 3. "Infanterie Manoeuvre auf der Schmelz den 21 September 1822." The infantry in a big carré. In the centre probably Emperor Franz I. in white general's uniform. He is identified by a cross drawn into the depiction. 4. "Cavallerie Manoeuvre auf der Schmelz den 21 September 1822." Court coaches with coachmen and riders in the foreground as well as officers on horseback. The Emperor and his suite can be seen on the left near the coaches. 5. "den 19ten September 1822." Court coaches, officers and spectators in the foreground. The infantry march past them, each company led by an officer on horseback. Emperor Franz I. is at the head, followed by 3 officers on horseback.

May/1809/Wigand f." war Kat.-Nr. 7 der Ausstellung Balthasar Wigand (1770 - 1846). Bilder und Kunsthandwerk aus Empire und Biedermeier, Historisches Museum der Stadt Wien, 1977 (ohne Abbildung). Die Schlacht bei Aspern (im französischen Sprachgebrauch bataille d'Essling genannt) gilt als die erste bedeutende Niederlage der Napoleonischen Truppen auf dem Schlachtfeld. Euphorisch - und vorschnell - wurde Erzherzog Carl durch Heinrich von Kleist als "Überwinder des Unüberwindlichen" gefeiert. Doch wenige Wochen später unterlag Erzherzog Carl den Franzosen in der Schlacht von Wagram und schloss mit Napoleon eigenmächtig den Waffenstillstand von Znaim - was seine Entlassung und das Ende seiner militärischen Karriere bedeutete. - Provenienz: Galerie Fischer, Luzern, Auktion 372 H vom 15. The sides and the hinged lid inlaid with finely openworked ivory plaques (minor defects in places), below which is the original covering of natural-coloured silk. A colourful military scene in watercolour on paper is inset under glass in the lid. Reproduction of a military parade of infantry and cavalry units before the Viennese city gates.
