Norman Wilkinson(1878-1971)
Who is Norman Wilkinson?
Artist Norman Wilkinson was a versatile, stylistically diverse painter and illustrator who specialized in marine and maritime art, and in lithographic travel poster design. His media ranged from watercolors to oils and from etchings to drypoint, including combination watercolors over graphite and oil and charcoal on canvas.

Artist Norman Wilkinson became known to the public from his posters, which hung in schoolhouses, railway stations, and government offices. Norman Wilkinson posters for sale include those he created for railway and shipping lines, lithographed from oil paintings with sweeping, spare color tones with black accents. His marine and maritime watercolors were more variegated in tone, characterized by abundant, sharp brush strokes. Norman Wilkinson paintings hang in British maritime, university, and naval and war museums, including the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Arts. You can also find other epochal marine paintings for sale at Invaluable.

LITERATURE:
Norman Wilkinson was a British marine painter and etcher who produced about thirty drypoints between 1924 and 1930 & also worked in oils, watercolours & was an illustrator & poster artist. He is known for inventing "dazzle" painting, the camouflage of merchant ships during WWI. Unlike other forms of camouflage, the intention of dazzle was not to conceal but to make it difficult to estimate a target's range, speed, and heading by disrupting a ship's outline. Dazzle attracted the notice of artists such as Picasso, who claimed that Cubists like himself had invented it. Ref: Guichard, British Etchers; Wiki.
