Provenance: Sale; Christie's, London, 28 January 1916, lot 57 Cornelia Craven, Countess of Craven (1877-1961) Her estate sale; Sothebyâ€™s, London, 15 January 1969, lot 120 Sale; Nadeauâ€™s Auction Gallery, Inc., Windsor, Connecticut, 1 January 2019, lot 380 Private collection, Newport, Rhode Island, until 2024 Notes: This elegant painting was formerly part of the renowned Craven Collection, amassed by the Earls of Craven at their 900-year-old family seat, Coombe Abbey. After the death of the 4th Earl of Craven, Cornelia Craven, Countess Craven, sold the Abbey in 1923 and relocated to Hamstead Lodge at Hamstead Marshall. There, she continued to live in Edwardian elegance taking with her many paintings, including this work, which remained in the family collection until it was sold in 1968 to pay for death duties of two family members. This painting tells one of the origin stories of the Bible, and a critical moment in the history of the Jewish people; the rescue of the infant Moses by Pharaohâ€™s daughter from the waters of the Nile. Pharaohâ€™s daughter, finely dressed, bejewelled and shielded from the sun by an umbrella, is seen to the right of the composition; to the left, her maidservants, one of them cradling an infant. On the ground we see the 'ark of bulrushes' fashioned by Mosesâ€™ mother. Here the artist has taken license in painting what looks like an elaborate woven basket from the 17th century. Cornelis Adamsz. Willaerts (1600-1666) was a Dutch Golden Age painter, who was almost an exact contemporary of Rembrandt (1606-1669). Willaerts was known for his paintings of biblical and mythological subjects, that present contemporary figures within biblical scenes.

coppia di dipinti a olio su tavola, cm 35x55 uno firmato e datato in basso a destra “Willaerts 1645”, "Entrambe le opere sono trattate con vivace gusto descrittivo ed in entrambe risulta chiara l'importanza assegnata da Willaerts al paesaggio, anche se l'artista sceglie preferibilmente temi di ambientazione spiccatamente acquatica - seguendo in questo la specializzazione del padre Adam - (...) Al di là della maggiore o minore importanza dell'elemento acqua, ritroviamo comunque nel nostro pendant il consueto impianto compositivo dei quadri dell'artista, con ampie aperture spaziali e figure piccole che si muovono in primo piano sinuose ed eleganti.
