GARTH WILLIAMS (1912-1996) Four preparatory sketches for Stuart Little. Group of four preparatory sketches created for the frontispiece of E. B. White's "Stuart Little" (New York: Harper & Brothers, 1945). Graphite on paper. 400x305 mm; 15 3/4x12 inches, sheets. Each initialed "GW" in lower margin; one drawing with exact tracing on reverse. Provenance: Estate of Garth Williams; Heritage Auctions, 2011; private collection purchased from above. This series of drawings shows the evolution of the drawing that eventually became the frontispiece illustration for Stuart Little. Two of the drawings have notations in pencil by Williams, likely for the approval of E. B. White and editor Ursula Nordstrom. One of them reads: "don't think he should look amused or worried" with an arrow pointing to Mr. Little. Below this is the word "no," probably in White's or Nordstrom's hand. Another sheet has the notation "like this best for head," also with an arrow pointing to Mr. Little. In a 1983 letter to Peter F. Neumeyer, Garth Williams wrote that after much thought, he decided to make Mr. Little look like E. B. White and to make Mrs. Little to look like White's wife, Katharine. Whether or not White realized this homage is unclear, as Williams wrote: "Mr. White passed the frontispiece without comment" (Peter F. Neumeyer, The Annotated Charlotte's Web. New York: HarperCollins, 1994, page 201).

Each one of these drawings depicts the infamous Minotaur as he is being slayed by Theseus in order to liberate the Athenians - a radical departure for Williams who is best known for his classic children's book illustrations in E.B. White's "Stuart Little" and "Charlotte's Web" and Laura Ingall's Wilder's "The Little House on the Prairie". These two drawings, however, present the antithesis of such sweet storytime subjects. Instead, one is privilege to Williams' raw creative process and his exploration of intense drama inspired by the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. Size: each drawing measures 8.5" W x 11" H (21.6 cm x 27.9 cm) In the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, the Athenians were required to send young men and women as offerings to King Minos of Knossos where they would be sacrificed to the raging Minotaur in the Labyrinth. Theseus traveled to Knossos on Crete and slayed the Minotaur in order to free the Athenians. It is this moment that Williams captures so graphically - a remarkable counterpart to the picture presented by his New York Times obituary which reads in part, "With the precision of Durer but with his own sense of innocence and wonderment, Mr. Williams created a world of storybook characters. Archive of three hundred and forty (340) Garth Montgomery Williams (Colorado, 1912-1996) sketches, letters pertaining to "J.B.'s Harmonica", and more. 1st-128th items: One hundred and twenty-eight (128) sketches, letters, and other documents pertaining to "J.B.'s Harmonica" written by John Sebastian and illustrated by Garth Williams, published by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich (HBJ), San Diego, CA, 1993. The majority of the items are pencil or ink sketches on paper or card stock with some artist's proofs, and a mock-up of the book. Also included is a one page TLS from Bonnie Ingber, Editor of Children's Books for HBJ, dated July 14, 1987, written to provide Williams with a First Draft of the book. Also included is a one page TLS from Allyn M. Johnson, Editor of Children's Books for HBJ, dated July 27, 1989 written to provide William with another First Draft of the book for Williams "to make his breaks" on. It also mentions "Tony Johnston's parrot story...to see if you might want to illustrate it". A third, blank First Draft is also included. Biography: Born in New York City, Garth Williams was an illustrator of several of the more popular post-World War II children's books: Stuart Little (1945) and Charlotte's Web (1952) by E.B. Garth Williams Hand-Drawing for the Cover Art of ''Emmett's Pig'' -- Signed by Williams on Verso

Garth Williams signed artwork -- done in pencil, watercolor and ink -- of his cover illustration for ''Emmett's Pig.'' The artist, whose endearing drawings have filled the pages of such classics as ''Little House on the Prairie'' and ''Charlotte's Web,'' signs ''Garth Williams'' in pencil to verso. Mary Stolz's touching tale about a city boy who wants a pet pig was first published in 1959 by Harper & Brothers, likely dating this drawing to 1958 or 1959. In the final edition of this cover art, Williams embellished the background with foliage, changed Emmett's blue striped shirt to red plaid and revealed more of Emmett's and the pig's faces by tilting their chins slightly. Artwork measures 6.75'' x 8.75''. Pencil notation, likely by Williams, to lower right reads: ''This one has blue added.'' Light smudging from graphite. Near fine.

Garth Williams (American 1912-1996). Original preliminary drawing for illustration #9 (appearing on page 21) of Charlotte's Web, 1952: Lurvy tries unsuccessfully to catch an escaping Wilbur. Ink on paper. Approximately 12.75 x 10.5 inches. Signed in full by Williams and dated 1952 at lower right. Also with Williams' notation in pencil: "First drawing of the scene -- this was redrawn for the book. Garth." Matted at some point, the image area shows minor toning; masking tape to top edge of reverse. Else fine.

Garth Williams (American 1912-1996). Original Drawing for the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award. [N.p., n.d., ca. 1960]. Original circular drawing featuring Laura Ingalls Wilder as a child, holding a doll, fashioned from three layers of paper, measuring 10 inches in diameter. Pencil on paper. Signed "Garth" on the front, and with Mr. Williams' full signature on the reverse with instructions to return the drawing to him in Aspen, Colorado. Drawing has a few shallow bends, a tiny nick to the edge (above the "G" in "Ingalls"), and a glue stain along the top of Laura's head. Else, in generally near fine condition. The Wilder Award is a bronze medal awarded to an author or artist by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, for excellence in children's literature.
