Hugh William 'Grecian' Williams,  Scottish 1773-1829-  View of the Sepulch

    Est: £200 - £300

Hugh William 'Grecian' Williams,  Scottish 1773-1829-  View of the Sepulchre of St Costantina, Rome;  pen, black ink, and grey wash on blue paper, inscribed and dated 'Temple of Bacchus / 6 Febry 1818' (lower centre), bears further inscription 'Sepulchre of St. Costantina / called the Temple / of Bacchus' (lower centre), 26.3 x 41.2 cm.  Provenance:  with Stephen Somerville, from whom purchased in July 1988.  Property of the Late Professor Eric Gerald Stanley, FBA (1923-2018) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Stanley).  Note:  The present work depicts the Mausoleum of Constantina, or Santa Costanza, on the Via Nomentana in Rome, which was built in the fourth century AD for the eldest daughter of the Emperor Constantine the Great (c.272-337).  Williams worked mainly in the medium of watercolours, depicting the landscape of Britain and Europe in his work. He travelled around Italy and Greece with William Douglas (c.1784-1821), an experience which fundamentally shaped his subsequent output. This culminated in his publication 'Select Views of Greece' between 1827-29, and earnt him the nickname 'Grecian Williams'.

  • Hugh William 'Grecian' Williams,  Scottish 1773-1829-  Temple of Minerva M
    Jul. 09, 2025

Hugh William 'Grecian' Williams,  Scottish 1773-1829-  Temple of Minerva M

    Est: £200 - £300

Hugh William 'Grecian' Williams,  Scottish 1773-1829-  Temple of Minerva Medica;  pen and grey ink on paper, inscribed 'Temple of Minerva medica' (upper centre), 28.4 x 46.7 cm.  Provenance:  with Stephen Somerville, from whom purchased in July 1988.  Property of the Late Professor Eric Gerald Stanley, FBA (1923-2018) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Stanley).  Note:   The Temple of Minerva Medica is a ruined nymphaeum of Imperial Rome which dates to the late 3rd or early 4th century. It is located between the Via Labicana and Aurelian Walls and just inside the line of the Anio Vetus. Once part of the Horti Liciniani on the Esquiline Hill, it now faces the modern Via Giolitti. It was once thought to be the temple to Minerva Medica ('Minerva the Doctor') mentioned by Cicero and other sources.  The decagonal structure in 'opus latericium' is relatively well preserved, though the full dome collapsed in 1828. It is surrounded on three sides with other chambers which were added at a later date. There is no mention of it in ancient literature or inscriptions.
