Inscribed signature and date on the underside * Untitled (Baby's Head), glazed earthen ware, circa 1975-76. Approximately 121 mm; 4 3/4 inches high. With the artist's studio blind stamp "William Workshop - Denmark" on the underside. Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; private collection, Denmark (1976). The ceramics of Walter Williams are scarce. The artist's studio in Denmark was destroyed by fire in 1980 - many such personal or unusual pieces were lost alongside his paintings, papers and prints.

Walter Henry Williams was deeply influenced by the colors and styles of Reuben Tam, Victor Candell, Gregorio Prestopino, and Ben Shahn, whom he met while studying at the Brooklyn Museum Art School in the early 1950's. One word that defines his work is "nature." Although he was born and raised in New York City, he always took pleasure in the sights and sounds of trees and bird, flora and fauna.
