            Est: $1,000 - $2,000

THOMAS H. WILLIS (DANISH-AMERICAN, 1850-1925) FOLK ART NEEDLEWORK SHIP PORTRAIT OF "WHITE CLOUD", oil on canvas with silk thread and silk / satin fabrics, a finely detailed depiction of a clipper ship in full sail flying an American flag, with crew on deck and a schooner in the background, signed and dated lower right, inscribed "Clipper Ship 'White Cloud' of Boston / 1859" lower left. Housed under glass in an old oak frame. Dated 1909. 19 1/2" x 33" sight, 23 1/2" x 37 1/2" OA. Catalogue Note: Born in Denmark, Thomas H. Willis (1850-1925) is recorded in Brooklyn, New York in 1870 working for a manufacturer of silk thread and embroideries. Not surprisingly, Willis incorporated these materials in his marine compositions, mostly portraits of ships. As an artist based in New York City, Willis frequently sought commissions from ship captains visiting the busy port and is known to have collaborated with fellow Danish-born marine painter, Antonio Jacobsen (1850-1921). Apparently Willis found a niche as a mixed media artist in this market, promoting himself as "inventor and sole maker of silkware pictures". The present example, a historical depiction of an iconic ship, demonstrates the artist's abilities to render marine vessels in detail and in a distinctive style.

            Thomas Willis (Denmark, NY, 1850 - 1925)

            Est: $1,000 - $2,000

Thomas Willis (Denmark, NY, 1850 - 1925) Signed and dated (1910) lower right. Oil on Canvas with applied silk accents to boat and sail. Inscribed verso on stretcher. Sight Size: 15 x 25 in. Overall Framed Size: 17 x 27 in. Framed behind glass. Thomas Willis was born in Denmark in 1850 and sailed to New York in 1870 where he settled in Brooklyn, NY. There, for a time, he worked for a manufacturer of silk embroidery thread (and this very likely influenced his choice to incorporate textiles into his paintings). Willis became a marine artist advertising himself as 'Inventor & sole maker of silk ware pictures' and 'Inventor and for over 30 years the only maker of silk marine pictures' (words written on original studio labels on the backsides of examples of the artist's works). In 1880, Thomas Willis was listed as a silk goods maker in New York: 'Willis, Thomas. Marine Pictures in Silk. 91 Degraw Street, Brooklyn.' Several original Willis studio labels identify other studio locations for the artist, including 'Telephone 1615 Bedford', and Sumpter St., at Fulton St, Brooklyn, NY', and '426 Stuyvesant Ave., Brooklyn, N.Y.". The '3 Sumpter St' address is noted in pencil on the label on the verso of this piece.

Thomas Willis (Denmark, NY, 1850 - 1925) "Corona". Signed and dated (1905) lower right. Oil on Canvas with applied silk accents to boat and sail. Thomas Willis was born in Denmark in 1850 and sailed to New York in 1870 where he settled in Brooklyn, NY. There, for a time, he worked for a manufacturer of silk embroidery thread (and this very likely influenced his choice to incorporate textiles into his paintings). Willis became a marine artist advertising himself as Inventor & sole maker of silk ware pictures and Inventor and for over 30 years the only maker of silk marine pictures (words written on original studio labels on the backsides of examples of the artists works). In 1880, Thomas Willis was listed as a silk goods maker in New York: Willis, Thomas. Marine Pictures in Silk. 91 Degraw Street, Brooklyn. Several original Willis studio labels identify other studio locations for the artist, including Telephone 1615 Bedford, and 3 Sumpter St., at Fulton St, Brooklyn, NY, and 426 Stuyvesant Ave., Brooklyn, N.Y.". The 3 Sumpter St. address is noted in pencil on the label on the verso of this piece. Sight Size: 20 x 36 in. Overall Framed Size: 26.5 x 42.5 in. Framed behind glass.
