Born in 1918, American artist Charles Banks Wilson was interested in art from an early age, eventually attending the Art Institute of Chicago, and opening his own studio in Oklahoma. Wilson was a well-rounded artist, practiced in watercolor, painting, and lithography. He also apprenticed under illustrators at the Chicago Tribune. Painter Charles Banks Wilson's art manifested itself in several successful careers including book illustrating, teaching, and painting portraits for the state legislature.

Artist Charles Banks Wilson often painted life-sized oil portraits of American Indians and government officials from Oklahoma, the latter of which can be seen in the State Capitol. Most of Wilson's figural paintings for sale feature well-known celebrities, sports players, and politicians such as Will Rogers, Sequoyah, and Senator Robert S. Great investments of effort and capitol pictured in a derelict state of abandon, metaphors for optimism and abandonment. Wilson plays on this with the empty foundation on the right foreground with its empty anchor bolts. Meanwhile a small operator pans for gold in the ruins. CBW's comments in the catalog raisonne read: ''The man separated the metal from the rock by hammering it into small pieces and then shaking it all in his hand jig. The heavier metal sank to the bottom, leaving the waste rock to be scraped off and discarded. This work was carried out amid old concrete mill foundations and forsaken ore bins.'' The print was published in a very small edition of only 25 impressions signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and titled lower left, No record of this image ever having been offered for sale in any venue could be found. Hunt catalog raisonne number 38. The image is printed on Rives watermark paper. Unframed. CBW's comments in the catalog raisonne read: 'Brightly colored hair ribbons were often worn by the women. Here they are being gathered as bets before a contest - a ribbon against a ribbon, or a shirt, or even money. I find that most Indian games somehow involve gambling.' This marks the first appearance of this extremely rare lithograph at auction, or having been offered anywhere for sale that we can find. According to all four major art auction record databases and entries on the major online bidding platforms it has never been up for bid.     Charles Banks Wilson (1918-2013) Inquest 1942 Signed and dated lower right, the title under the image here differs from that in Hunt's catalog raisonne of Wilson's prints where the edition is identified as being only 25 prints pulled. Unframed. In Hunt, the title is The Interrogation. There the entry reads, This small edition, printed by George Miller, gave Wilson the chance to use a finely grained stone. A light etch achieved the soft, delicate tones that would have been lost in a larger edition. George Miller was a master lithographer who, during the golden era of America printmaking, was the primary reason for the revival of lithography during the WPA era. His workshop was the driving force behind the imagery of all the major regionalists of the 1930s and 1940s. In Hunt, Wilson added, 'The art editor of Collier's magazine at the beginning of World War II, before G.I. helmets were changed, wanted to see how I might handle a non-Indian subject here to four I had done only western pictures for him.' To the best of our knowledge, this particular print is the first from the edition of only 25 impressions to appear at auction, or anywhere for sale that we can find. We offered this same print on June 27, 2025 where it went unsold. It is re-offered here with a lower opening bid. To the best of our knowledge, this particular print is the first from the edition of only 26 impressions to appear at auction, or anywhere for sale that we can find.     Charles Banks Wilson (1918-2013) Sugar in the Gourd 1959 The widely exhibited work, and basis for a later lithograph of the same name, is signed lower right, dated and titled verso by the exhibition label from The Thomas Gilcrease Museum 'An Oklahoma Portrait: Retrospective of Works by Charles Banks Wilson' July-September, 1989. This painting was also included in the Ashby-Hodge Gallery of American Art exhibition Charles Banks Wilson: The Artist as Historian in 1998 and Oklahoma.A Retrospective Art Exhibition in Enid, Oklahoma in 2006. Artists are always on the lookout for new and interesting subjects and scenes to paint. The sitter for this painting, a man of interesting character, seasoned with time, was an employee of the Miami, Oklahoma water department. Wilson encountered the old fiddle player somewhere along the way and asked him to pose for his painting class at Northeastern Oklahoma College. In his book The Lithographs of Charles Banks Wilson David Hunt quotes Wilson as saying, 'During rest period he tuned it up and entertained the students - an enjoyable surprise!' The painting up for bid here was made during that class alongside the artist's students. In a letter from 1994, Wilson asks the owner of the painting at the time, Mrs. Louise Wallace, to sell it back to him, stating, '' If you will- and would set a price, I certainly would appreciate the opportunity to purchase it.' Instead, this work remained in the Wallace family and was handed down to the current owner. That letter, and correspondence related to the various exhibitions mentioned above, will be included with Sugar in the Gourd. The title refers, in this case, to a square dance tune of very lively tempo dating to the 19th century. It originated in Southern Appalachian and Ozark traditions. The colloquialism 'Sugar in the Gourd' is much older and refers not only to good times and plenty, but also a sweet or lively surprise found with or inside of something plain and ordinary. The term originated with folks who couldn't afford even the cheapest of tin containers. One version of the song has the square dance caller crying, 'Sugar in the gourd - gourd on the ground. The way to get the sugar is to roll the gourd around.' Panel measures 21.75 x 29.25 with a framed size of 31.25 x 38.75 inches.
