Richard Wilson (Welsh, 1714-1782) Farm with a Pond (The Village Pond) oil on copper 17.5 x 23cm Another version of the present composition by Wilson, also on copper and of near identical proportions, is in the Ulster Museum, Northern Ireland (BELUM.U2301, see Richard Wilson Online, P185). Wilson is recorded as having painted that work on the reverse of a copper plate used by Michael 'Angelo' Rooker for his original trial etching of Wilson's The Villa of Maecenas at Tivoli, published by Boydell in 1776, the likely date of the present composition. Indeed, copper was an extremely unusual support for the artist but, towards the end of his career, Wilson was reduced to poverty and often unable to afford conventional supports. It is therefore probable that the present painting is a repetition of the Ulster version, with both pictures dating to the same late period when Wilson was required to sell works for small sums. With this in mind, the mundane subject matter, a departure from his earlier Grand Style, is also particularly poignant. Nevertheless, some hallmarks of the artist's technique, such as the painting of foliage directly onto the underpaint, rather than over the sky, are still apparent in the present picture. We are grateful to Dr Paul Spencer-Longhurst for confirming the attribution to Richard Wilson following a first hand inspection. 34 x 39cm framed

Wilson visited Lake Avernus, north-west of Naples during the latter part of a six-year stay in Italy from 1752. A chalk drawing in the British Museum attests to his study of the landscape. The site, which is located in the Phlegraean (or burning) Fields, a volcanic area between Naples and Cuma, is particularly rich in classical associations. Its caves, earth tremors and volcanic flares gave rise to the belief since ancient times that the entrance to Hades, the Underworld, was located here. Virgil's Aeneid relates how Aeneas, landing near Avernus, asked the Cumaean Sibyl to prophesy his future, and was led by her into Hades to meet the ghost of his father who foretold his destiny. In Wilson's day the subterranean passage down which Aeneas is said to have descended into Hades survived in the so-called Grotto of the Sibyl. The classicaly educated Grand Tourists would have appreciated the arcane literary allusions of Wilson's subject. As with other popular views, Wilson executed several versions of this composition. Variants are in Tate Britain (no304,circa 1760), The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, and in the collection of the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry.

It is thought that the view may be based on the composition of two paintings by Gaspard Dughet. William George Constable noted that the locality of the view depicted in the present lot was uncertain. If it is the river Po, the surrounding country is quite unlike that near Ferrara, or along the greater part of the Po valley. There is no evidence that Wilson ever went to Turin or nearer the source of the river, where there are hills. The title derives from an inscription on one of the other versions of the work, now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.

English school of the 19th century. Follower of RICHARD WILSON (Penegoes, Montgomeryshire, 1714 - Denbighshire, 1782). "Landscape with figures by the lake". Oil on canvas. With apocryphal signature with initials in the lower right corner. With period frame. Measurements: 45 x 60 cm; 51 x 66 cm (frame). The work in bidding follows the models of Richard Wilson, one of the most important British landscape painters of the 18th century. He drew much of his inspiration for his work from the imaginary landscape painting of Claude Lorrain. In this work we see a placid nature captured with attention to detail and naturalism. The landscape is brought to life and animated by the characters that are splashed in the foreground. Richard Wilson studied in London with Thomas Wright. He managed to portray the Prince of Wales and the Duke of York. In 1755 he returned to England, and became one of the first English landscape painters. He exhibited at the Society of Artists in 1760. When the Royal Academy of Arts was established in 1768 he was one of the original members, and was a regular contributor to its exhibitions until 1780. He was not a popular artist during his lifetime. However, after his death, his fame grew and in 1814 about 70 of his works were exhibited at the British Institution. Currently part of his work is preserved in the National Gallery.

The Villa Negroni once stood near the Baths of Diocletian, at Rome. Only the Casino now remains at the south-west corner of the Piazza delle Terme. This was built by Domenico Fontana in 1580 for Cardinal Felice Berutti, afterwards Pope Sixtus V.

He drew much of his inspiration for his work from the imaginary landscape painting of Claude Lorrain. In this canvas we see a typical English Baroque view, albeit contextualized in the Neapolitan countryside with Vesuvius in the last instance, rigorously ordered in a thoughtful and rational composition. Nature is placid and captured with attention to detail and naturalism, and the landscape is brought to life and animation by the characters dotted in the foreground: we see a peasant woman with her son in front of a fountain, highlighted by the bright tones of their clothes and worked with particular attention to the description of the types. The composition is clearly structured around the concept of nature. Thus, in the foreground we find two typically Italian trees whose canopy largely covers the blue sky of the composition. This nature sees its continuity in the last planes: an esplanade that combines water surfaces and vegetation is dotted with small buildings, a characteristic of the Italian landscape of the seventeenth century. Finally, it is worth mentioning the coloring used, of brilliant tonality, especially for the sky. Richard Wilson studied in London with Thomas Wright. He was able to portray the Prince of Wales and the Duke of York. In 1755 he returned to England, and became one of the first English landscape painters. He exhibited at the Society of Artists in 1760. When the Royal Academy of Arts was established in 1768 he was one of the original members, and was a regular contributor to its exhibitions until 1780. He was not a popular artist during his lifetime. However, after his death, his fame grew and in 1814 about 70 of his works were exhibited at the British Institution. Currently part of his work is preserved in the National Gallery.

A woman, her arms raised in a faint, stands on the shore, surrounded by other angry women. Two ships are sinking in the stormy sea. The depiction shows a story according to Ovid: Keyx, husband of Alkyone and son of Hesperus, did not return from a journey to the oracle in Klaros. A storm in the Mediterranean had capsized his ship. Alkyone, who was praying to the gods, saw the lifeless body of her husband one morning. She then threw herself off the cliffs to drown herself in the sea. But instead of sinking into the sea, she flew towards her dead husband. The gods were merciful and had turned her into a bird.
