The Welsh landscape painter Richard Wilson is one of the most important British landscape painters of the 18th century. He was heavily inspired by Claude Lorrain's imaginary landscape painting. The painting shows Lake Avernus in the light of an early evening. An ancient ruin is in the background. Two trees frame the picturesque scene on the right side. Lake Avernus is located in the volcanic region near Naples and it is part of the Phlegraean Fields. The region is associated with ancient mythology and still considered a pleasant holiday destination due to its natural beauty. Many artists of the 18th century were inspired by the classical landscape painting. There are various versions of this work by Wilson, his students and successors. The present picture is one of Wilsons highest quality versions. The most famous version was can be found in the Tate Gallery London, and is dated circa 1765. Monogrammed below left

Adhesive labels of the Galerie Heinemann, Munich, numbered 18318 and 10827 (crossed out) on the stretcher among other things. According to the information available in the Heinemann database, the present painting had been on commission at Heinemann since 26 October 1926 (Fastighets A. B. Drott, Stockholm, is indicated as the seller/owner). In 1911 it was already mentioned as a purchase in the gallery's stock book. In 1942 the painting was finally sold to a private owner. Charlton HallDer Avernus-See mit dem Apollotempel in der Ferne Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 44 x 55 cm. Links unten Monogramm „RW“. In dekorativem Rahmen. Am Rande eines Weges, der um einen großen See führt, zwei Wanderer in Rückenansicht mit Blick auf das blau-graue Wasser mit einem kleinen Fischerboot, das gerade Netze auslegt. Linksseitig der beiden Männer zwei antike Fragmente, ihnen gegenüber, auf der anderen Uferseite, wohl die Überreste des antiken Apollotempels. Dahinter sich hochziehend ein bewaldetes Gebirge mit einer großen Burganlage unter hellblauem Himmel mit großen Wolkenformationen, im Licht der leicht gelblich untergehenden Sonne. Rechtsseitig wird das Bild gerahmt von einem hohen Baum und einem knorrig nach oben ragenden Baumstamm. Harmonische ruhige Malerei, teils mit Spiegelung der am Ufer stehenden Gebäude im Wasser, in der typischen Manier des Künstlers. Anmerkung: Ein fast identisches spiegelverkehrtes Gemälde des Künstlers wurde bei Bonhams, London, am 12. März 2014 unter Lot 63 angeboten, jedoch sind bei diesem Gemälde drei Figuren im Vordergrund dargestellt. (13311013) (18)

Weite Landschaft mit im Mittelgrund befindlichem See während sich rechts im Vordergrund ganz dem arkadischen Zeitgeist verpflichtet eine Menschengruppe in antikisierender Kleidung befindet, die in ihrem Tanz den ruhigen Grundton des Gemäldes bricht, ihn jedoch auf diese Weise auch bestätigt. Der See war im 18. und auch noch im 19. Jahrhundert ein populäres Motiv der romantischen Landschaftsmalerei – zum Beispiel war er auch für Hackert ein beliebtes Motiv – und war schon bei Vergil der Eingang in die Unterwelt. Den arkadischen Bezug ermöglichte nicht zuletzt die antike Bebauung, so ist etwa ein Apollo-Tempel noch als Ruine erhalten, der den Zeitenbezug ermöglicht. Literatur: Vgl.
