Not Only Have They Survived, They Do Prevail" is a series taken between 1969-1980, demonstrating his mastery of candid street photography and his focus on the evolving roles of women during a transformative era in American culture. The series celebrates women’s individuality, aligning with its evocative title that suggests a commentary on gender dynamics. It remains a compelling document of its time, reflecting both Winogrand’s artistic vision and the evolving discourse on gender and society in the late 20th century. A print of this image is in the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. – Light pressure marks from mounting in corners, otherwise in near excellent condition. - - Sollten Sie detailliertere Zustandsberichte wünschen, kontaktieren Sie uns bitte. / Should you need more detailed condition reports, please contact us.

    GARRY WINOGRAND (1928–1984)

    Est: €2,000 - €2,400

GARRY WINOGRAND (1928–1984) | Park stroll in Manhattan, New York City 1971 Image size: c. 22.5 x 33.5 cm English Gelatin silver print, printed c. 1980 on double-weight semi-matte paper c. 28 x 35.5 cm, in excellent condition. Signed and edition numbered "20/20 AP" by the photographer in pencil on the reverse. PROVENANCE Collection of Fern M. Schad, acquired from Light Gallery, New York. When Winogrand published his photo book "Women Are Beautiful" in 1975, at the height of the feminist movement, he presented a document of the changing social landscape and the spirit of women in public spaces during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Yet his radical snapshot aesthetic was shocking at the time: He photographed women in unobserved – not always favourable – moments, often in the midst of movement, talking, smoking or eating. In the book's introduction, he writes, "Whenever I've seen an attractive woman, I've done my best to photograph her. I don't know if all the women in the photographs are beautiful, but I do know that the women are beautiful in the photographs." The 2014 Winogrand retrospective at WestLicht was named after this important project. * Vollbesteuert

Winogrand, Garry: Venice, California from the series 'Women are Better Than Men. Not Only Have They Survived, They Do Prevail'

    Est: €800 - €1,000

[*] Venice, California from the series "Women are Better Than Men. Not Only Have They Survived, They Do Prevail". 1979. Gelatin silver print, printed 1982. 22,7 x 33,9 cm (28 x 35,5 cm). Signed by the photographer in pencil on the verso. From the portfolio of the same title, D.E.P. Editions Inc. New York 1982. - - Garry Winogrand’s "Women Are Better Than Men. Not Only Have They Survived, They Do Prevail" is a series of 15 gelatin silver prints taken between 1969-1980, demonstrating his mastery of candid street photography and his focus on the evolving roles of women during a transformative era in American culture. The series celebrates women’s individuality, aligning with its evocative title that suggests a commentary on gender dynamics. While praised for its raw and spontaneous portrayal of women in public spaces, it has also drawn critique for reflecting the male gaze, with some arguing that it objectifies its subjects rather than empowering them. Regardless of interpretation, the series remains a compelling document of its time, reflecting both Winogrand’s artistic vision and the evolving discourse on gender and society in the late 20th century. – Light traces of mounting in corners, minimal silver mirroring along print edges, otherwise in near excellent condition. - - Sollten Sie detailliertere Zustandsberichte wünschen, kontaktieren Sie uns bitte. / Should you need more detailed condition reports, please contact us.
