Jack Wolfe is an American painter who created portraits, abstract art, and political works. After four months living in New York while his work was beginning to garner attention, he grew disillusioned with what he felt was the overly commercial art system. He moved back to Massachusetts, where he was raised, and built his own studio where he worked until his death in 2007.

The American artist Jack Wolfe is a painter best known for portraiture, political works, and abstract pieces. His work began to gain attention in the early 1950s, at which point he moved to New York - where Abstract Expressionism was emerging. He didn’t stay in New York for long. Instead, he moved to Massachusetts, where he created many of his best-known works. For example, an untitled, undated Wolfe painting sold for $2,550 in February 2022 via the Massachusetts auction house Kaminski Auctions.

After four months living in New York, Wolfe became highly disillusioned with what he perceived to be the overly commercial art system. He chose to relocate to Stoughton, MA and build himself a studio where he could create art that would be unshaped by commerce. He continued painting at this studio until his death in 2007, earning consistent acclaim along the way.

Wolfe was raised in the Massachusetts town of Brockton, and he was born in Omaha, Nebraska. His formal art education began at the Rhode Island School of Design, and he returned to Massachusetts to continue his education at The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, now a part of Tufts University. At this institution, Wolfe and the artists Cy Twombly and Ellsworth Kelly studied under the painter Karl Zerbe.

Although Wolfe eschewed traditional notions of fame and success, he earned recognition from the Carnegie Institute, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, the American Federation of Arts, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Like Zerbe, Wolfe is often associated with the Boston Expressionist movement. The Boston Expressionists were known to favor figuration and a touch of abstraction, with bold colors and expressive brushwork defining their paintings. Political work was also common among the artists of this movement. In 1959, the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln, MA was home to Wolfe’s third solo exhibition. According to reporting by the Sudbury Mass Weekly Independent, Wolfe was frequently described at the time as “the American inheritor of French Cubism, a logical descendent of Picasso.”
